Myself and my friends have a "band type thing," and we're trying to write several original songs, and then produce an electronic EP. First, my friend gave me a generic idea of someone not wanting their life and the life of the one they love to be like "parallel lines," stretching on and on but never crossing. From that, I wrote our first song called "Lines."

Lines

V1
I walk by you every day,
but you never seem to look my way.
And I smile to catch your eye,
But every time you just keep walking by.

Middle
But today I have decided,
Yes I have made my mind up,
That I don't want our lives to be...

Chorus
Like lines
Like parallel lines,
For the rest of time
Yeah we're right beside each other, but we never do reach over and collide
like parallel lines
Yes you are here beside me but you never seem to find me,
Like lines.

V2
Well I've known you for so long,
but now I'm just trying to hang on.
Do you even know my name?
Or is everything gonna stay the same?

[Middle]

[Chorus]

Bridge
We're growing further apart,
but that just means our paths are bound to cross.
Not to be cliche,
but I know we'll meet again one day.
and when we do,
I don't want our lives to be...

Like lines,
like parallel lines
for the rest of time
yeah we're right beside each other but we never do reach over and collide,
like parallel lines.
yes you are here beside me,
but now our lives dont have to be

like lines,
like parallel lines,
for the rest of time,
yeah we're right beside each other, and now I'm reaching over to collide
and now you're by my side
yes you are here beside me,
and now our lives won't ever be
Like Lines.

Then yesterday, we were all sitting in the basement and we decided to throw together a song. We wrote and recorded the entire thing inside of 4 hours. I wrote the lyrics, and we all pitched in for the recording. We called it "Nothin' to Do."

Nothin' to Do

V1
Chillin' with my friends downstairs,
we don't know what to do.
We thought maybe we'd write a song,
just me and them two.

We're sittin round in a circle,
racking all our brains.
Whoever knew it'd be this hard,
and cause us so much strain.

Chorus

Shaba-daba-daba-daba-dabadee-do, writing songs is hard to do,
Shaba-daba-daba-daba-dabadee-do, writing songs is hard to do.

V2
Thats when we think of something,
and the idea it just clicks!
The lyrics flow and the beat just goes,
and baby the song just sticks, oh,

[chorus]

[chorus tune, but whistled]

Bridge
Thats how we wrote this song you hear,
we really hope you like it...
becauuuuuse...

[chorus, slower]

I know, not exactly writing genius on either of them, but they're catchy! What do you guys think? Gimme some critique! Thanks :D

Thats kind of similar to our rough idea of it, I started with...

I walk (G)by you (C) every (D) day,
but you (C)never (D)seem to look my (G) way
etc.

we're still working that one out. I'll play around with your chord progression and see :D thanks!

I do encourage to all friends if they are interested in song writing.Otherwise i feel that it is not a easy task you can sing well make music well but song writing is a different job.You must be a good observer, sensitive man and you should understand behaviors and sentiments for this.I must call this person intellectual.

The relaxed thrown together aproach is very good, but even this style has to have instruments that are in tune with each other. Playing with other musicians is about 'tuning in' with each other and this is easier to achieve when your instruments are producing notes and harmonics that compliment and blend together. Happy chillin'...
