Hey guys, a good buddy of mine has started a sort of little project in an attempt to create a few cigar box ukuleles. He is on an extremely tight budget and almost all of the materials he is using is taken from other projects that he never finished.

He started with a simple particleboard cigar box. Something very cheap he bought online, 10 for 10

anyway he started with these

and then he picked one and come up with this

after the cut out he added bracing

and then began his job of shaping the neck, please keep in mind he only has a hammer and chisel

he has also made a bridge

and has carved out the shape of the neck

he will be using old violin tuners
mail

and strings from one of my old ukes.

This is where the project is at currently and we are hoping for a good sound.

My friend and I do understand that its very rough, and is not the prettiest to look at, but this is a trial, the first of hopefully many homemade uke's. and personally I don't think its bad for a first try.

Very cool. The important thing is that your friend is making an ukulele. You probably won't know how it turns out until it's done. One thing your friend might consider is getting a solid spruce or cedar top. It would really help with the tone. Good luck on y'all's project and please keep us posted on the results.

all the boxes are made out of particle board except one and he wanted to practice making a uke first so i wouldn't mess up the nice box, also he's trying to spend as little money as possible. :) Thanks for the input. We are hoping to have this this done next week.

Update*

so I am throwing some ideas around with him and we are trying to see if we could possibly make another head, similar to this

suggestions on how to make it work?

Some of those cardboard jobs sound kinda cool. Impressive job for just a hammer and chisel lol... Next thing someone will be shaving a top and hollowing out a body with a flint axe. Primitive is fun.

Lkg fwd to sound samples!
