Mark Nelson describes taropatch tuning in his new book, Learn to Play Slack Key Style Ukulele. To do this, you tune down the first string (of your low-G uke) a step, to G.

Would doing this "tune down" to play taropatch for a few songs, then "tune up" on the 1st string, cause 1st string problems do you think?

It's a good book, by the way.

Not unless you have sharp edges on your nut or saddle. I've never broken a string on my Kamaka tenor and I play taropatch fairly regularly. Plus, I bend a lot (not just little bends either).

PS: "Learn to Play Slack Key Style Ukulele". Clever title. "Slack key" vs. "alternate tuning" has always been quite a debate.
