I found this beautiful Koloa uke on Edlery.com! All solid mahogany and all that good stuff! Anyone owed a koloa uke or this particular uke? How are the friction tuners on them? Here is the link to the uke:http://elderly.com/new_instruments/items/KU620.htm

My budget for a uke is below $300...is this a good deal for the money? What others are you favorites in this range? I already have a mainland so please do not suggest those :D

Also, I am not a fan of friction tuners...how much of a hassle would it be to put some peg tuners on (the ones that look like friction but are geared)? Any drilling required? I am not good at working on ukes, is this something I could do or pay a pro? And which peg tuners do you recommend?

Aloha Mrthurman52,
I'd spend a little more than 180.00 and get a Mainland.. solid mahogany..

Yeah, those Koloa ukes look nice, never seen one in person though so I'm not really much help. But I'm a huge fan of the new Pono ukes, the solid mahogany ones are great, that'd be my vote.

If you are purchasing it from Elderly, you could try asking them to replace the friction tuner with a more modern friction peg with geared tuners hybrid (if they have any) and ask them for a quote. You could even ask them their opinion regarding the performance of Koloa relative to the other solid wood uke they have in stock at similar price range such as the Ohana.

I just got a Pono MC E with Koolau case on ebay for $285, free shipping. Was previously looking at Ohana CK35 GS, nice on on Fleamarket. Lots of great solid concerts under $300. Have seen the Koloa, they certainly look like they are worth the price. Someone had a soprano here that sold for $100, A gorgeous baritone that sold for $125. A few folks on UU responded that have them, and they are happy with them. I'm sure you'll get lots more suggestions

Got an email from a guy who previously was going to sell his Mele mahogany pineapple concert uke, didn't and now decided to sell it. Would be a sweet uke to own. wmdonley@sbcglobal.net

If you are still interested in the Koloa Concert, here's one on ebay $139.99 or Make an Offer
