Is there anywhere I can buy single ukulele strings?
I don't mean specialised wound strings, but normal strings.
I'm left-handed and play the uke upside down, so my top string is A, which, being the thinnest, is more liable to break than the others. In fact, I've never broken any other string but an A string. I use Aquila Nylguts, but can't find singles anywhere. Single strings are available for every other type of string instrument that I'm familiar with, but not, it seems, for ukes.
I've got enough G, C, and E strings to last me for the next decade, and don't want to waste any more money on strings I don't need. I'd be perfectly happy to buy A strings in bulk if they were available.
Any ideas?

Ya might just have to stop by local shops and ask, but it would have to be shops that buy string in bulk on spools, because retail packs are full "packs". If you found a shop that has it on spools, they might sell it by the foot.If you buy them on line, shipping would cost more than a single string. I mean, and set of Aquilas is $5, and I have a hard time buying them on line with shipping unless I am buying several sets. Single strings, just isn't cost effective for a shop to sell as individual strings..

Or check out Sven and Rob Collins,Rob is a member here
I'm not sure about Sven. They both use fishing line, which
you can buy on 100 or 200 metre spools.Much cheaper and
on a lot of models, work just as well as more expensive strings!

You can get D'Addario single strings here. Or you can use the E string from a classical guitar set (D'Addario, Savarez) . . . single strings are available from Strings by Mail.

I would suggest getting your uke checked out. If you are only breaking the "A" string there is either a uke issue or a strum issue.
You might also use one of your spare "G"'s and tune it up the step to "A".

Yuh, I was gonna mention that too. I had a guy bring me one that he kept breaking a string like that, and all it was, was a sharp bur on the saddle. He had a plastic saddle, and the nit line from the mold when it was made was sharp and cutting his A string after a few days of playing. All I did was file the nit line and smoothed out his saddle and it was a done deal.
Worth looking into ...
