View Full Version : Memory thread about the 3rd Annual Ukulele World Congress

Lots of stories, photos, and videos were made during the 3rd annual Ukulele World Congress that occurred on June 3rd & 4th, 2011 in a field with a stage in a rural part of Indiana known as Needmore, Indiana. These things are spread over the internet. Several places on the Ukulele Underground, Facebook, emails, etc. Hopefully, those photographers, videographers, and writers/story tellers will add them to this thread so they can be easily referenced in the future.

A beautiful video of the Ukulele World Congress 2011 has been made by Kilaana

Then you need to add some participants.

While we're waiting for some of the resident poets to put this amazing weekend in perspective, let me simply say that this weekend was most excellent. It was well worth the year-long wait, and it lived up to some very high expectations.

Some highlights for me:

Mainland on Friday: walking in to Mike's very crowded shop with batman leading a circle of familiar faces in song. Tootka ringing up grinning customers, sometimes in a line three deep.

The creek: flocks of big butterflies, geodes everywhere, cool clean water on a 95* day, and crawfish the kids caught.

Performing: Soliciting an audience under the tent so my girl and I could play the song she helped write. And playing on stage, for my first time anywhere.

The rain: which flooded our tents leaving the kids sleeping in the car on their first camping trip. A memorable experience for them.

The all-nighter: on stage Saturday night. None of us wanted it to end so we played until the sky lightened and the birds started chirping good morning.

The people: familiar faces and new friends. Most of them trying to give you hugs (and/or beers). Interesting discussions, good music, and too many people I had wanted to spend more time with but somehow couldn't fit it in.

The music: playing with absolute beginners, and sitting in with true experts. Realizing that my skills have progressed. Listening to the stage while drinking beer with good friends.

HoosierHiver, you pulled it off in style my friend. Thank you!

I leave you with a bit of the creek, featuring Yoppy.

Then from the southern United States we have John. John is a fairly new father. I think he bought Noelina his daughter a Ukulele already. She can't be more then a couple of months old. But with John around I'm sure she will be one heck of a Ukulele player.

Well folks that's all I have regarding the Ukulele World Congress for 2011. Wishing I had more photos and videos especially from Friday. In the dog days of summer and the cold days of winter or when I've hit the wall with my Ukulele playing. I'll and hopefully some of you will pull up this thread and remember or look forward to the Ukulele World Congress.

Thanks Mike/HoosierHiver & Tookta as well!!!

Have a Great Day and an even better year, until, the next Ukulele World Congress,

In the dog days of summer and the cold days of winter (off tangent - but today around 3pm I checked the temperature and it was -68 F with windchill conversion -105.4 F at the Amundsen-Scott base located at the South Pole) or when I've hit the wall with my Ukulele playing. I'll and hopefully some of you will pull up this thread and remember or look forward to the Ukulele World Congress.

This is by far my favorite of all my pictures. One of my most favorite pictures ever. This is Bonita or ADD on here. She was an awesome lady who came to town to basically be awesome. She came to my cabin and cut us fresh fruit. She told me she was at the field one of the nights til 7 in the morning and I saw her up that same morning around 10. I have no idea how she did it but if you saw her driving around in her white SUV packed to the brim with ukuleles, music and whatever goodies she had that day you were in for a treat. Thanks Bonita!

Bonita was one of the first to sign up for the Let It Be collab. I invited her to meet us at the Strawberry Fields cabin. I'm so glad she came. We had a lot of fun chatting and playing songs together. I got a ride back to the cabin one evening in that very same SUV. Hey, Bonita. If you're reading this, thanks so much! And, I look forward to seeing you again when you come up for the workshop later this fall.

How about that, the harp (harmonica) player shows up again. Once again with fairly local talent. Here we have Gretchen and Mark from Louisville playing:

That wonderful harmonica player is none other than Mr. Rick Beets of Indianapolis. He is also quiet the ukulele player and collector, and a delightful individual. Look out for next year, he says he plans to spend a lot more time uking

I have to say that part of the reason that UWC is awesome is because of people like you coming, playing, and teaching so many of us. I hear so many people say "Oh, and Dom showed me this riff or this song". You help drive the great aloha spirit and make these events so much more fun.

False memory thread: I dreamed that I was back at UWC last night. It was the same as I remembered and the bonfire was about to be lit. Anyway, it was great to see some of ya'll again in my dream. And now for coffee. And Bonita! Bonita was there with the lollipops again!

I had a great first intro to UWC. Made some great friends, got some great tips and help. After the bridge popped on my homebuilt, tenor cigar box uke due to the heat (and my poor glue choice), I got some great advice from some experienced builders. Just got it repaired this week and updated my Instructable (http://www.instructables.com/id/Building-a-Cigar-Box-Tenor-Ukulele/) and it just got picked by an editor and featured as the top popular link on the Instructables homepage! I also gave a shout-out and links to Mainland and Mainland Mike as a great parts source. Thanks to everybody for being a willing knowledge source.

The bomb of an attempt that I had at "performing" on stage at UWC 11 has been a great instructor for me. Today, I played my wife some songs and she said I was playing them "differently". hell, I was even playing uke on one of the seediest streets of Bangkok today and doing it with renewed purpose because of my UWC experience.

Ultimately, I want to go back next year and play some more. I really don't care that I messed up. It was just fun to actually get up there and try.

I am still trying to make sure Boden (that dancing kid) stays focused to learn uke to also play next year.
