Reminds me when I was on a swim team back in elementary school.
It was an "A" meet and I was "C" swimmer. The event was the 400 meter relay and our "A" team was goofing off somewhere so most of our team were alternates. We were far behind after the first swimmer. By the time it came to my turn to swim the last leg, one team had already finished. The ref said that I didn't have to swim because we were already disqualified when the boy doing the breast stroke took too many strokes underwater. But I jumped in anyway.
I ended up swimming the entire length of the pool back all by myself because everyone had finished. It was the only time that I got an applause for coming in last.
