I have a pretty bright tenor ukulele. I have tried Aquilas but they get too brittle. I don't care for Worths on this ukulele. I had tried the regular Southoast string, and I didn't care for them either, but the Southcoast mediums are keepers on my concert.

So I went found inexpensive fluorocarbon fishing leader. It is about the mellowest string I can find that still has some ring to it. I've been using it for about 6 months.

I just got some Southcoast "Soft" strings to test and I decided the Mediums were the closest size to my current strings and to Aquilas. The Southcoast are brighter than my fishing line, but they don't sound brittle. I think I like the sound and they play nice. I just put them on and I am going to see how they sound after a few months.

I never know whether or not I have that good of an ear but.... I liked the GT Fishing Leader a lot. Then when I listened to the Southcoast they are nice too, more distinct of sound. How do you say it? crisper chords. I like the Southcoast best but my a narrow margin.
 
After seeing ukeeku's article on fishing leader, I was pokin around lookin and found some leader we have in the USA which comes originally from Germany but it is cheaper than Seaguar I believe. I like the simple sizing of it. I would be curious what string diameters you are using?


Triple Fish fluorocarbon leader is

wait fixing it (I just called them and they got it off the spools):

.90mm = 80#
.80mm = 60#
.70mm = 50#
.60mm = 40#
.50mm = 30#
.45mm = 25#

I was thinking CGEA would be: 25#, 40#, 80#, 30#

What do you use?

I like the fishing leader a little better. Individual notes stood out more clearly, I think. How to describe...better definition? The South Coast were okay, but just not as distinct in my opinion. Of course, that could reflect merely the fact that you've been playing the leaders for a while and are more used to how they feel. The South Coast clip sounded kind of hesitant, so it might just have been that you're not used to the feel of them yet.

Couldn't get the Southcoast clip to finish loading, just kept spinning/loading, but the fishing leader sounded great. I have some Southcoast lights to try on my Mele koa tenor, delayed due to hand sprain.
 
Guess I am the odd one out...I liked the Southcoast strings better. More richer fuller tone, at least to my ears anyway.
 
First off... I think I like the Southcoast Soft Mediums better. I need to see how they break-in, but I have to agree with my wife that they are "crisper but not brittle" and the fishing leader was a little more "dull".

John... I'm not sure if I was hesitating, because I don't hear much of that on the original MP3. It may be the upload to Box.net... then again I may have also been thinking of how to get warm and saw your signature.

Huna... I'm using 40-50-60-80 Lb. I paid $30 for all 4 rolls and I think the company that made them is Eupro is long out of business, I bought it off ebay. I don't think it is 100% fluorocarbon, but it has worked pretty good. There are times when it lacks a little sparkle that I hope the Southcoast Soft strings will add.

Phil... The clip just spins on the computer at work also, but that may be an added benefit.

Yeah, SC strings are brighter, clearer, and crisper. Thanks for the samples, I have four sets of SC strings in stock for the next time I need to change strings, but have not used any yet.

I am biased because I have Southcoast strings on 2 tenors now and wow, they are amazing. They add a complexity and depth to the sound that is otherworldly. In these 2 mp3's, I still hear how great the SC's are. I am about to order some for my Koaloha concert.
 
Southcoast for me too, just a more balanced and clearer sound to me. I use the medium gauge set on my Kanile'a and I'iwi concerts, and just finished stringing a set of flatwounds on my Lichty tenor. The first sounds as they acclimate are, like Mouthy1 says, amazing.

I like the Southcoast. To my ears the tone is more colorful with a with greater depth. I like the richness and clarity, nice and sweet.

Heh, heh. Looks like I'm shaping up to be the odd one out. :) I thought maybe I'd lost my mind so I went back and listened to them again. I wonder if I was getting a glitched stream yesterday because the Southcoast sample sounded better than I remember it - less hesitant sounding. I still like the fishing leaders just a little better, I think, (I think they've got a touch more sustain) but the difference doesn't seem as great as it did yesterday. Yesterday the difference seemed really clear, today I think it would be fairly tough for me to consistently pick one in a true double-blind test.

I find strings need a couple days and some playing to settle.

Both sounded nice in different ways. But that being said, I liked the Europro GT Fishing Leader better in the beginning section, and the SC strings in the last part.

Maybe try another SC sample in a couple days?

listening to those 2 samples, i'd go with the southcoasts any day, richer fuller midtones, sweeter all round in my opinion, great playing by the way.
 
I have been nothing but impressed with the Southcoast strings AND Dirk from Southcoast strings. He has taken very good care of me and has done a great job on this forum answering questions and giving good info. to folks. I have another Kanilea(hopefully) coming my way very soon and I will be placing another order of the Heavy's for sure!
 
Which sets should I get for my sopranos etc.? I get confused at the variety. I have all sizes of ukes.

Depends on the tuning and tension you like. Any of the Lights or Mediums are a candidate. The Lights will be lower tension (good for the delicate old instruments). The standard Light would be the brightest set, the Soft Light & standard Medium next, and the Soft Medium the mellowest.

If you have ukes of all sizes, you can try them elsewhere as well. We don't make "Tenor strings, Soprano strings," etc. The different gauges all come in 30" lengths so you use them the way they best fit your needs. Each string page gives you our take on tension for the various sizes, and the Combo page lets you put together a sampling of different sets at a discount - here:
