Rosewood vs Mahogany for Vita Uke

I was looking at the Ohana Vita Ukes online at Elderly and didn't realize there are two. One has an R on the name so its CKP-70R meaning the body and back are Rosewood instead of Mahogany which is the CKP-70.

I think this is a laminate back and sides with a solid top but was curious if I might be missing anything. The rosewood costs 20 more than the mahogany. I imagine its just going to look redder and darker but otherwise should be about the same right? I suppose without playing them its impossible to tell but...

I did not know they made a rosewood model either. I have an Ohana soprano with solid cedar top/ solid rosewood back and sides/ebony fingerboard. Had the nut adjusted and tuned it up to D. It really sings. I would not think that rosewood/mahogany laminate would make that much difference in sound. The rosewood looks very nice. Or course, I have a personal preference for the look of rosewood.

They are virtually identical and have very similar sound. The only difference is that the rosewood laminate costs more. Some, including me, would say that the rosewood looks better.

Some of the laminates we use on our sopranos (e.g. figured willow and flamed mahogany) actually costs more than the solid mahogany that we use.

An original will have a figured mahogany back and sides. This is my favourite design and I have made them in mahogany, koa and fiddleback makore. Gonna be making some concert sized ones later in the year if anyone is interested

I have only heard the Ohana Vita Ukes on YouTube and I thought the Mahogany sounded better....very close.....but fuller!
