I'm interested in starting an ukulele club in my high school. Does anyone have any experience, tips, pointers in this area?:D

Read the first article:

Make songbooks with songs that are familiar to your age group, Ashockey. You or someone else will need to conduct/lead the group. If your school has a music department, contact those teachers for assistance. Here's a beginners ukulele lesson plan I use:

Music teachers will appreciate the layout of that lesson plan. Ric

I found one of the challenges when starting our club was how to accommodate the range of playing ability of the members. If the songs are too easy for the more accomplished players, they will be bored. If the songs are too hard, the beginners will be frustrated. What I did was state from the outset that we would have a beginner session for a half hour, then introduce more challenging songs as the meeting goes forward. A good site to find easy songs is Dr. Uke's Waiting Room. Feel free to look at our club's song book, too. Another good site for finding songs is Chordie. You can change the (default) guitar chords to ukulele chords, plus easily change the key.

Good luck!

Oh cool. I started one at my high school last year and it worked out pretty good and it was a blast! We just figured out what days and times people could meet, found a club adviser, and a classroom we could use. Since about 6 of the 15 members were the only ones who could play the uke, we just found a bunch of songs we liked and played them while everyone else sang. Then we also taught each other how to play.

I guess what would be a good like motivation for the club is to do a performance of some type. Our club decided we would enter the talent show which pushed us to practice and work together.

Hopefully this helps ya a little and it wasn't too boring to read! Good luck!

Gillian, by reading the songs in your songbook,:

I assume that you are (like me) not the age of a current high schooler. That's an awesome songbook your club has developed, by the way. Ric

Aw, what gave my age group away? No songs by Justin Bieber? ...:eek:ld:

Thanks for the compliment on our song book, Ric.

It is not easy to start a uke club and I send best wishes to any young person who wants to start one.
