Hey am, new to the forum and relatively new to the instrument. Been playing about two months on my Soprano Lanikai LU-21 uke and really enjoying it. My question is related to the tuning of certain notes on the fret board. For instance, when the open strings are in tune, my fretted A on the first string is almost 20 cents sharp compared to the open A on the fourth string. Is this a string tuning issue or just a "beginner uke" issue. Are more expensive ukes more "in tune" with themselves from a fret board stand point? I notice it on a couple of other notes on the fourth string as well. I played a little bit of electric bass many years ago and never noticed it. Not that I have perfect pitch or anything but I just wondered if it was me or if there was a solution to that.

Thanks everyone!

G.

It sounds like your uke has an intonation problem. It might be that the action on your uke is so high that when you fret the first string it makes it go sharp. Have you noticed the same problem with other fretted notes?
