View Full Version : I made the news with my little Ukulele!

I am probably as exciting as watching paint dry, but I have successfully overcome the idea of playing publicly.
I work in the summer at the local History Center, and it occurred to me that "History Center" was far less exciting than "History Center With Live Entertainment"...so I tend to bring along an Ukulele when I go.
Now- the extraordinarily nice old ladies there, who all see me as their grandson (at 38 I am the youngest docent) always tell me how wonderful I play- I do not believe a word of it.
Fact is, I am a hack. I will get better- I am wearing out parts of trees that have been around hundreds of years, and in only 11 months...but that is neither here nor there.
today a gal that writes the local section for the newspaper was in doing some research and she was treated to a little aloha.
http://cloverdale.towns.pressdemocrat.com/2011/07/news/serenading-history-2/
Spreading it around brothers and sisters- spreading it around :)
In any event- if you read it if you could click the "like" button, it means my new fan gets to pay her bills I suspect.
Cheers

Hey TCK, That's a good story and it looks like from the comments that you have some local fans.

I think I drove through Healdsburg Cloverdale once or twice. Once to drive through the redwoods and once to go to the casino. My old job was based in Santa Rosa.

Thank you for sharing that. I appreciated it.

Great warming article...Very envious of the yo-yo expertise though...could never manage that as I tried it as a smoking replacement lol!

Hey, Dave..... can I have your autograph?:) Seriously, though, that's pretty cool, seems like you're doing things the right way..... My wife plays a little guitar but has a pretty stressful job, works late regularly.... I can't get her to play with me as often as I'd like, but when we do, it's just great. I always try to remind her how relaxed she is after we play through a few tunes.....

Awesomeness +

But man, this is old news. We of the Tasmanian bush have known of Dave Laurice proselytising the ukes charms to unsuspecting history buffs for some time now. The guy's a legend. Sweet as. :)

Very cool, you make me proud to be a uker! And if you weren't a fine musician the reporter likely would have gone to where she wouldn't be bothered by your "hacking" on the uke. Instead she was drawn to your "music" (her words).
Thanks for being a cool guy with a uke,
Don

That 's great! Show's that Vedder's not the only one that makes playing ukulele cool.

Thanks for all the great comments folks. It is the support here and the enthusiasm that make me carry my uke everywhere I go, and want to play it every minute of the day. My hat is off- glad you all enjoyed the video.
As for beaten paths, yeah, they are best avoided.
Yo-Yo- also goes everywhere...Folks in town don't know my name, they call me the "Yo-Yo guy"
SuzukHammer- I need a caddy to take an accordion with me- it won't fit on the Vespa. Are you still in Sonoma County? Would be cool to play with some other folks.

TCK – I just want to comment on the statement in the article that your wife “suggested [you] both learn to play.” That’s what my wife and I are doing, and it has been immense fun to learn to play with her. A truly great couple’s activity!

Love it hobblecreek- this has proven to be some of the best times we have had in the last 18 years...not that there were not a lot of great times, but this has been GOLD. Best of luck to you and your wife in your Ukulele travels :)

haha- If I could play like Clifton Chenier Dirk, I never would have found the ukulele...man was a genius! I do some old time cajun, and dad went into the swamps to buy an accordion a few years back and came home with a real doozy- I ring out the waltzes on it while he and ma dance around the dining room-good enough for me :)
FrankieJ- that is gold! I will sign your uke first (snicker)...:)

Cloverdale, nice town. Reminds me of going over to the Sonoma coast and diving for abs at Salt Point and Sea Ranch! Any abs left out there?
