Check Ukester brown's website or youtube and I think me says it needs special thin banjo tuners... depends on the uke of course.

Short answer; yes. Make sure the tuners aren't too big for the hole. You can't drill them bigger!

They may not fit, but they don't crack. I've put replacement metal tuners on TV Pals, Lisas and others and they didn't crack. My TV Pal Deluxe was originally outfitted with metal tuners, as are Islanders.
