I notice the wonderful performance by John KING of a Bach Bouree and cannot make out what make of concert uke he is playing. Does anyone know? It is wonderful sounding!

Jim D'Ville played on the other day at the San Jose "Play By Ear" workshop.

Like Buttah!

He mentioned that he doesn't have UAS, wasn't in the market for uke, but stopped by the shop for a visit, played it, and his wife told him to buy it, period.

I don't know which record you listened to, but on the CD that comes with his book he plays a concert flea to demonstrate that you don't need a high end uke to get his sound.

That's possible. But King also played Bach (and Hawai'ian music) on a reproduction of a machete (precursor to the 'ukulele) made in Madeira in 1850 by Octavianno João Nunes.

Here's John King's account of how he acquired the 1850 Nunes instrument, and here's a video performance on a reproduction.
The replica was built by David Means of Glyph Ukuleles. Here is a picture of him from Dave's site holding both the original and the replica.

Here he talks about receiving a Mike DaSilva instrument.

There is more about the DaSilva replica at the bottom of this page with a video of John playing Carol of the Bells on it,

He plays a concert Fluke on the recording for his book The Classical Ukulele. There is a picture of him holding the Fluke on the cover.

Oh you're right. I always mess up flea and fluke...
