And how warm/bright is it, in comparison to mahogany/maple?

Never heard of it before. :/

Sometimes called butterfly wood. It looks beautiful most of the time. Kala has a line of Bocote Ukes. Never heard oone in person.

The only bocote i heard before was the Bocate Series from Kala. I also heard it was a laminate. But it looks really nice though :)

From Lmi's website.

Bocote has a Rosewood-like taptone and features an attractive, tobacco/reddish brown color with distinct, parallel black lines (it does not show the spider-webbing figure that our best grade Ziricote does). It comes from the same family as Ziricote (Cordia) and is found in the same region (Central America to Northern Amazon). Less brittle than Ziricote, it is a popular wood with wood turners and has had success as a guitar tonewood, though few builders have created stock models from it yet.

Where we build - Central America - it's a local wood. Very unusual - very lovely. Here are photos of a Tenor Guitar and Tenor Ukulele back. You can see the color varies from golden to copper.

As far as sound, the rosewood reference is pretty good. The sound is dark - bass is strong. As opposed to Rosewood, Bocote doesn't have the reverb quality - on the other hand - that dark bass is clearer than a rosewood.

The Kala Bocote is laminated. You won't get a clue there as to what it would be in a solid.
