I own an Alcivar soprano? Banjo Ukulele and want to know something about tuning the head for optimum tone. It has a solid back and five adjustable brackets around the head. How do I know if the tension is right for the head? Can I over-tighten it and do damage to the head?

I'm by no means an expert, but I'll tell you what I've been told. :)

Yes, you can over-tighten it.

You need something the a flat edge, such as a ruler or a pencil, depending on how big the head is. It needs to be as long as as the head is across at the bridge, if that makes sense.

Put your ruler-thing across the head, right up against the bridge. What you're looking for, is how far the bridge pushes the head down. It should be about 1/16" lower than the head is at the rim.
