Howzit everybody...

Late July we were blessed to host an Ukulele Underground workshop featuring Aldrine, Ryan and Aaron, and this weekend we've got another goody... the legendary Tahitian Drummer, T.Fere Itae, of Te Maeva!

He's only in town for a quick vacation with his family, but was able to set aside a few hours for a drum workshop! Truly an honor to host this event.

If you are interested or know others who may be, please don't hesitate to pass the info and flyer along! If you own any tahitian drums and are coming to the workshop, we recommend you bring those... oh and sticks too!

I would say bring what you have and then find out if it's usable when you get there... =)

you can also use what's at the studio. I guess it would be a first come first serve kinda thing. I'm still in the middle of investing in more equipment...

i still have yet to find a place to buy toeres...
and even if someone does have them i cant seem to find that right sound and bounce that i like...
 
best bet is San Jose Fete, other mainland Fetes or any of the Hawai'i Heiva's. There's a few places online that sell drums in Hawai'i. Cheif Miko being one of them. He came out to the San Diego Pacific Islander Festival a few years back... I don't know if he still does or not, but that's another option. BTW, PIFA is coming up. I believe late Sept! For pahu or fa'atete: I believe Sefa from Nonosina builds and sells them up in L.A.

The Tahitian Drum Workshop was outstanding! T.Fere Itae was beyond
amazing. Even though he never spoke English, we all understood what
he was conveying, musically. I'm not a percussionist, but I left that
workshop with a good foundation, to build upon. T.Fere Itae took the
time to assist each student individually on all of the patterns he taught.
I was surprized how large the size of the advanced class was (I only
did the beginner's class, as that proved to be more than enough for
my skill level. This is the first time I ever tried a torere. In the photos
you'll see I brought two sets of bongos and a djembe. There are not
many sources on the web for toreres and none of the local music
stores had even heard of them. Thanks for the invite, Joey and
please thank T.Fere Itae for me! Ric

It was a great session, Joey. The Pacific Arts Dance Studio's got it
all goin' on! Yeah, I'd sure appreciate those links to get some to'ere
drums. Are there any instructional DVD's available? Ric
