Just to prove that I'm as big an idiot as the next..I made a cock up today ..While doing a trial fit on a dovetail joint all ready for the glue up..I dropped the neck..it bounced of a nearby hardwood chair..and recieved a small ding to the headstock..I have read that hot water applied to the ding will bring it out like magic..so I put the kettle on and held the ding over the steaming spout and completely ruined the french polish finish ..Mrs Timbuck will now have to redo it, while I stay in the workshop for a couple of days untill she cool's off :(
The good news is that the ding came out Ok.

Ouch! But...I guess there are worse punishments than having to stay in the shop for awhile. I've had good luck folding a paper towel a few times, dampening it with a bit of water, placing the towel over the ding, then applying heat with the tip of a hot soldering iron. This usually steams the dent out without affecting the surrounding area. Worth try. Hope you are allowed back inside the house before the weather gets too cold.
