Do banjo ukuleles usually have an open back? And for those who played an "open back" banjolele, does it last long enough? I don't want to accidentally damage it at the back...

There are three types of banjo-uke backs, open backs, resonators and closed backs.
I prefer closed backs, they give you resonance but are not too loud as some resonator banjo-ukes can be. Open backs can be dampened against your body when you play,I guess some people like that option, but I find it makes it more difficult to play standing up if you don't want to muffle the sound against your chest.
As far as strength, it depends upon the make, open backs are not necessarily weaker, but I guess the top is more exposed to damage if you lay it down on something that pokes it.

But remember, with an open-back BU there is no way you can damage the back!

My Goldtone is closed back but you can take the back off if you wish.
