Cliff did a lot of his solo work (that's from the Jazzology label here in New Orleans), on a Concert. In the first years for those instruments, some were sold as "Tenor"s.
The trick to that mellow sound is that he's in B flat tuning, and with gut strings, of course.

Thank you, Dirk! I knew about the gut strings, but wasn't aware of the Bb tuning. Those recordings by Edwards from the 40s, are some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. Kudos to the Jazzology people for making them available.

The image looks like a Martin No.2 soprano. Check out the binding and the short-scale neck.
I love the cigarette wedged in the strings, nice touch.

You're likely right on the uke in the photo, Pip. But that's just an old publicity shot, not what's being played in the song.

That's his favorite uke "hackin George". He died an untimely death of headstock cancer, he was a three pack a day Lucky Strike smoker. No one knew back the they wuz bad for you , what a shame.
