What kind of ukulele is Cliff Edwards playing here?

Cliff did a lot of his solo work (that's from the Jazzology label here in New Orleans), on a Concert. In the first years for those instruments, some were sold as "Tenor"s.

The trick to that mellow sound is that he's in B flat tuning, and with gut strings, of course.
 
Thank you, Dirk! I knew about the gut strings, but wasn't aware of the Bb tuning. Those recordings by Edwards from the 40s, are some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. Kudos to the Jazzology people for making them available.
 
That's his favorite uke "hackin George". He died an untimely death of headstock cancer, he was a three pack a day Lucky Strike smoker. No one knew back the they wuz bad for you , what a shame. :(
