Got an idea tonight while watching a show on tv when a new commercial for Cinnamon Toast Crunch came on. The instrument playing the music in the background was......guess what???? A UKULELE!!

I think it would be a hoot if UUers would post 'UKE SITINGS' in the press. Although I suppose any media would be fair game, but I think TV might be best because most ads are national and we all might have a chance of seeing them, whereas radio and print are definitely local (then again that would be great for all the locals!!).

If you see/hear a ukulele in the media post the specifics here so we all can catch it.

...just an idea:uhoh:

The ukulele is very happy sounding, so its music can be and has been abused in commercials that attempt to remake the image of somewhat shady industries, as evidenced in this parody:

I don't know if this counts as a "sighting", and it's only tangentially uke-related, but...

I'm currently reading a book by Erik Larson called "Thunderstruck". Like his previous book ("Devil in the White City"), it weaves together actual, real-life events that took place a century ago, but it's written like a regular, fictional thriller. Good stuff so far. Quite a page-turner.

Anyway, at one point, he talks about one of the people going to see a performance by George Formby. He describes Formby as a "much-loved comedian", but no mention of any banjo-ukulele. :(

I'm guessing he's talking about George Formby senior, who was father to the uke-playing George, and was quite popular in his own right, back in the day.

the movie AUSTRALIA,

saw this opening day, loooong but good movie. One of the main tunes was when the dude was playing around the camp fire with a black ukulele. Another was when they showed a band on stage during a ball, two more dudes cradling ukes and later playin them. Aussies represent! :music:

ingrid michaelson on jay leno tonight, played a song on ukulele.

although, she didn't play on it so much, because sara bareilles was on piano and the uke was just supporting it.

what a coincidence that i was playing ingrid michaelson's "the way i am" today on uke.

I've noticed this one particular show, a cartoon, plays ukulele in some parts of the show. That show is Spongebob Squarepants! You're probably thinking in your mind "Wow...." Yes, yes, I know. But Hey, I'm only 15! I grew up with that show. Anyway, I realized that while watching if you actually listen I believe you can hear the sound of an ukulele in the background. I've been thinking about this waaaay before I started playing the ukulele, but when I saw this thread it just came to mind!

Well yea!!! That one is almost too obvious to need stating, but, I'm glad you did. I'm way older than you (from the Bugs Bunny generation) and Sponge Bob is one of my favorites (only because my 3 daughters watch it so much:rolleyes:). Actually, the uke is not that far back in the background, its pretty much front and center in all the soundtracks. Thanks for posting!!:worship:

I saw a small 4 stringed instrument on "Living with the Kombi". It was hanging on the wall of the guys hut. It was just a brief shot in the background. I don't really watch the show so I don't know if they bust it out for the kombi tribe.

But someone had to bring that in on their hike through the jungle, pretty cool if you ask me.

A few days ago, I was watching the "Landing the Eagle" episode of the Discovery series "When We Left Earth: The NASA missions." They show some footage of the three astronauts though the window of their isolation chamber after returning from the moon, and Neil Armstrong is playing an ukulele in one of the shots.

Yes, that b/w photo of Neil Armstrong is excellent. But this was a couple of seconds of color motion picture footage of him playing while sitting with the other astronauts, looking out the window of their isolation chamber.

I was watching "Five Easy Pieces" a movie from the 1970's last night.
Jack Nicholson and a friend driving down the street and the guy is playing a Uke...later they go to his house and the Uke is sitting on the mantle behind the couch.

Looked like a Martin to me.

I believe that in the Goldfish Commercial (The snack that smiles back!) There's this one where there are several of them about to race...and the starting line is what seems to be a 3-stringed instrument. At first I thought it was a guitar because it seemed big but then again they are small, and it looked as if there was 1 string missing, making it a 4-stringed instrument, making it a Ukulele?
Oh and there's that Travelocity commercial where I believe what seems to be an ukulele playing in the background? You know, the commercial where the gnome is holding cards and a hand keeps taking it away and there's a background poster of a beach and later in the commercial it falls off...
