To drill the holes for those StewMac mandolin tuners I use:

... this time out of 1/2" steel instead of 16 ga like the old one (in the background). Should take me a lot longer to wear this one out :)
 
Nice jig! Makes me want to upgrade the maple block I've been using for my tuners
 
Dave, I once drilled sixty 1/16" holes thru 1-1/2" 304 stainless steel. That was an adventure! Didn't break a drill.
Drilling five 1/16" holes in 1/2" steel is not my idea of fun... besides, they are in the tuner's mounting plate :)
 
I have always found it easier to drill a smaller hole like 1/16" than a larger hole. Just have to use plenty of oil and chuck it way into the chuck so only enough to make the drill is sticking out.
