Hey, gang. :)

Here's an interesting story, well, interesting to me, anyhow.

I was scouring Ebay for Martin Style 2s (my favorite uke in the Martin pantheon) and I came across one in December that had the name Prince Wong painted on it. It didn't really move, so I thought this was an opportunity to put in a bid with a chance of getting it. And I DID get it, and found out who Prince Wong was: http://www.grassskirt.co.uk/24.html

Here's Prince Wong, perhaps playing this very same Martin, on "Somebody's Lonely": http://soundcloud.com/mhcrispo/prine-wong-somebodys-lonely

So, this early-mid 20's Style 2 arrived before the holidays, needing to have fret #2 reset and the nut raised. I got it back today, and haven't been able to put it down. Here's a half a tune on it - missing the verse and a chorus.

It's one of Cliff Edwards's 'plain brown wrapper' numbers that they sold to you if you knew what to ask for.

THAT'S ABOUT THE MOST AWESOME THING EVER!!!

Firstly I love that song and that's a great version. I'm going to have a close look at that when I get home and have a go at playing along. But also what a nice looking (and sounding) Uke and with the history too...Sheesh! Jealous doesn't even come close!

Very nice, John - and one of my Favorite Cliff Edwards songs, too!

I don't know much about Martins, but I do know that someone let me play an old Martin last year at a Dance Festival, and it was the first Soprano I was able to play without my fingers getting all cramped up... plus the sound was spectacular.

Thanks for letting us see/hear it, AND the information on Prince Wong - that audio clip was inspiring!

A great performance, with charm, personality and super-duper strumming! Thanks a bunch!

That was great! If you ever get a chance, you should post the chords—I think a lot of us would love to play along!

That's such a great story. I looked up the uke, and it looks it needs a little TLC. Have you put any other work into it?

Thanks, Guys and Gals. I appreciate the kind words.

If you want to play the song, its a pretty straightforward one: http://www.alligatorboogaloo.com/uke/tabs/050218.html

Gadzukes - The crack in the back is so tight, that it needs no work - same with the hairlines in the top; that all must have happened in the long past, as it's tight as a drum. Same with the fretboard - the cracks could be filled, but the rosewood is so stable, it needs no help. Even those friction tuners work fine. I thought this would be a fixer upper, but there's nought to fix.

Great playing and singing! Oddly, I saw this song the other day on the very same website you linked, and I almost printed it to learn. The printer ran out of paper after I printed another song and I was too lazy at that particular moment to open the desk drawer and grab more paper (sad, I know...). Fantastic solo at the end, and when you sang the first lines I'd have sworn it WAS Cliff Edwards if I hadn't been looking. Good work!

And about that uke, that is very cool. I love my Style 2. It's a loud little thing. Mine doesn't have a nifty story that goes with it (that there's any way of knowing, at least), but I love it just the same. It was my first Martin.

Great rendition!!! I love how you vary strumming. Its so hard to alternate that I love hearing people who do it so effortlessly.

Nice sounding Uke John. It reminds me of the sound of my SK-38! Ha!! Okay, but my SK-38 does sound "kinda" like it. Well, a little like it. Seriously, it really sounds great and your playing just adds to the greatness.

I felt the rhythm of the song and just waited, knowing the ending strums would come! Beautiful...

Thanks, guys!

Tom - I actually got tired of waiting for the SK-38 and didn't think I'd find a Style 2 in the same price range, but this was so close I had to pounce on it.

Chris, you have to learn it! BTW, Style 2 was always my favorite of the Martins, so really happy to have this one.

Stan - :D I want to straddle the uke side, AND the dork side. ;)

Thanks, Nongdam. It's easier when you've been playing forever. :D

Thanks, guys -

I don't think a tutorial by me would be of much use, but check out Peter Nixon and Kitchen Ukulele's tutorials; they're brilliant.
