View Full Version : changing nut width

.Hi wanted some advice. I am building my first uke, following the Hanalima Ia tenor plans. the plan calls for a 1 3/8'' nut spacing, I have been thinking of changing it to 1 1/2''. So my question is would I have to change the width at the 12 fret, and string spacing on bridge also. If so would it be 1/8'' on both? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To retain the visual appeal of the fretboard you probably want to widen things at the twelfth fret. If you do not want 1/8" you could go for 1/16".

The best thing to you could do is to simply draw it out. Grab a pencil and long ruler, you can use the back of the plan. The width at the twelth fret will be a function of the string spacing at the nut and saddle.

Yup...draw it out full scale with regular string spacing and modified. See what looks right to you.
Adding an 1/8th inch is a pretty big jump though....any particular reason you want to change?

Best go for an 1/8th each side at the nut and 3/16th at the twelth co's the string has more movement at that point, and you dont want to go over the edge string bending in mid solo do you :o..that's the dimension i've got from my old Martin Soprano:D
