After reading some postings here and a bit of research I ended up buying a Korg CM-100L. It's advertised as a contact microphone for use with tuners but many web reviews mention that is works well as a clip-on pickup. Although the spring clip is not very strong, it serves it's purpose by clipping on like the clip-on tuners. Attaching it to the headstock provides ample contact for the transducer to transmit the vibrations to a standard guitar amp. It provides fairly good frequency response over the 4 strings of my ukes as well as my guitars. I don't think I'd recommend it as being performance quality but for under $10 it provides a good inexpensive method for amplifying your guitar or uke.

I've tried one of these and although they amplified the uke, it picks up every little touch on the body, and the sound is very muddy.
But at that price you wouldn't expect anything else.
