After reading some postings here and a bit of research I ended up buying a Korg CM-100L. It's advertised as a contact microphone for use with tuners but many web reviews mention that is works well as a clip-on pickup. Although the spring clip is not very strong, it serves it's purpose by clipping on like the clip-on tuners. Attaching it to the headstock provides ample contact for the transducer to transmit the vibrations to a standard guitar amp. It provides fairly good frequency response over the 4 strings of my ukes as well as my guitars. I don't think I'd recommend it as being performance quality but for under $10 it provides a good inexpensive method for amplifying your guitar or uke.
