Question about types of rosewoods and Cedar.

Hi guys,

How many kinds of Rosewoods and Cedars are there?

I've heard of Brazilian Rosewood, East Indian Rosewood. Acoustically, are there any 'Superior' rosewoods?

As for Cedar...I've heard of Red Cedar, Port Oxford Cedar (I think?), Western Cedar..

Anyone care to add in?

Port Orford Cedar is really a cypress. And that is all I know.... There are some helpful websites though. Go to the Mya Moe website, they talk about woods and try this link http://www.acousticmusic.org/Research-Wood-sp-30.html

Neither Port Orford cedar nor western red cedar are true cedars, but rather are in the cypress family, Cupressaceae. Other members of this family include redwood and incense cedar, as well as MacNab cypress, which I mention only because I'm using it to make my from-scratch ukes.

Spanish cedar is also not a cedar, but is closely related to mahogany.

I just spoke to someone last night about an all Port Orford cedar bodied ukulele. He said he has played them on guitars and they really ring. Could make for an interesting ukulele. The POC smells so good too
Lots of different rosewoods out there. Brazilian has been possibly the most coveted. Any in the US has been here for years as it's no longer legal to import it. LoPrinzi Guitars and Ukuleles has a nice stash of it. Seen it with me own eyes! There are many other alternatives to BRW and of course many related species.
