Pono AT vs Pono MTD

I'm in the market for a Uke and was looking at the Pono AT or the Pono MTD, among others, and was wondering if anyone here owns one of these? If so, a review or any info on them would be appreciated, and as always any sound would be great as well.

I actually had an Islander MST-4, but had to send it back because of some blemishes and now there just aren't any to be found. I can't see or hear these (or any) in person because there just aren't any Uke shops around here except for GC, and they don't have much at all in the stores.

Actually as I look at other models as well and search around there are so many Ukes that are listed as "out of stock". I'm new to Ukes and music for that matter, but was surprised to see that. It almost seems "seasonal" the way they are stocked, once there gone that's it until the new models come out.

I've got a Pono MTSH, can't speak highly enough of that uke! It's great in every way. I've heard that the finish is even thinner now on the new ones. Mine has a pretty thin finish on it, and it sounds and plays great! They are one of the best ukes on the market in my opinion.

I have both models and if I have to choose between the two, it will be AT or ATD pono.

Care to elaborate on why you prefer the acacia? What makes my decision so difficult in choosing a Uke is that I don't have hands on access to anything. I have to rely on sound clips or reviews from others, so any info or opinions are appreciated.

I bought the ATD from HMS in December of last year (Sorry, not AT). Previously had been using the Big Island, personally I prefer the sound of Pono. There is a video I just played it. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the video, yes it helps. The more I hear from the Pono brand the more I like it. Nice video by the way, you play very well.

Unless you really need to buy one uke now, otherwise, may I suggest you to hold for a few more weeks. I understand, after watching the NAMM2012 videos, there are some new models coming soon. If you like Kanilea's Islander, they have some new models too.

Yes, I have thought about waiting a bit since there is a lot of out of stock right now everywhere. It initially came down to the Pono and the Islander, but I may be leaning towards the Pono now. Again, not being able to hold and hear an instrument is so frustrating.

Did you try Uke Republic? The website says they have them with and without a pickup installed. I have not ordered from them but UR has gotten good reviews from other members here.

Yes, I did check there but they are out as well, the web site does say more coming soon though.

Although not a tenor player, I do play both the Pono Solid Mahogany Baritone Deluxe and the Pono Solid Acacia Baritone Deluxe. Both are fitted with MiSi pickup systems. Although the Acacia is a lovely sounding and beautiful instrument, in my opinion, it pales it comparison to the Mahogany's fuller sustain, resonance, and tone. The Acacia has a much brighter and "lighter" sound and tonal quality. I suppose that depending on the kind of music that you play (we play jazz and swing) the choice would depend on the kind of tone and resonance that you prefer.

I have a Pono MPTSH and absolutely love it. Great uke at a great price. I don't think I could find a better uke in that price range. I own a custom Ko'olau and sure, it's a better uke, but when it comes to sound quality, the Pono is not far behind.
