I just got a note from Amazon that Jake Shimabukuro's new book Peace Love Ukulele (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/1458413772/bge-20) is now not shipping until at least the end of Feb. You can of course place an advance order, which I did because I think it helps them decide the initial printing order, but I'm still kinda impatient. It was supposed to come this week.

It's possible that they've gotten more orders than their original shipment can fill, and they're having to delay some shipments. That would explain why some users are getting different delay notifications (I haven't gotten any notification at all, and it still estimates online it'll ship sometime in the next week). Those who ordered more recently may not get their books as soon.

I ordered mine through Jake's website, it seems to be coming via Music Dispatch; and so far I have not received anything about a delay.

Of course that doesn't mean there won't be one, and I haven't got a shipping notice either.

If Jake has them at his concert, maybe I will get one on the 19th (Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center) and have him sign it! There would be plenty of time to cancel the amazon order if they are estimating late Feb early March. If we buy from his concert tour, I am sure he gets a bigger percentage of the price.

I'm wondering if the book will be suitable for beginners. Would anyone care to review it once you have them? I want to get one, but probably will never be able to play anything at all :)

Still, I will definitely get one!

Gwynedd
02-09-2012, 02:57 PM
I doubt it would be a "beginners" book, so I am gearing up by playing through the Mark Kailana Nelson Fingerstyle book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0786673427/bge-20). I figure that when I am adept at this, I can start the Jake book but meanwhile, it will be instructive to read the music while listening to his songs.

Hal Leonard, the publisher, is in Milwaukee. ;) But Jake's website links to Music Direct, which is in Minnesota. Still not far!

I'd love to give you guys a review but I've only been trying to play for three weeks, and JUST getting up to reading tabs, so....all I can say is -- it looks really really hard to me!

If you REALLY want Jake's new 'Peace Love Ukulele' songbook right now, do what I did. Go to one of his upcoming concerts. I just got home (Friday night, February 10th) from his concert at the Napa Valley Opera House, and there they were for sale ($25) at the table in the lobby with all the CDs and tee shirts. "SOLD!" I said to the lady there. And by the way, Jake did his usual out of this world job onstage - just him and his uke up there. Bravo, Jake.

Hey jimdrum, how is the book? Is it a tab book aswell as musical notation?

Dan Uke
02-11-2012, 07:06 AM
Since most people aren't going to the concert, it isn't an option and I personally would not pay that much since mine's on order. I guess I'm going to havce to bring my Eddie Vedder Hard Cover book and ask him to sign!! LOL

Jake's book features both treble cleff music notation along with the tablature directly beneath. It has every tune from his Peace Love Ukulele CD, plus 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' and 'Hula Girl', for a total of thirteen. As soon as I made my purchase at the table (about twenty minutes before showtime), I turned around (undoubtedly with this big smile on my face), and who do I see walking towards me through the crowd in the lobby - none other than the Maestro himself! All I could manage to say to him as I held up the songbook was "Hey, everybody's looking for this!". And in his polite and gentlemanly way, Jake just smiled and apologetically replied "Gotta go warm up now.....".

It actually looks pretty playable although the arrangement is 10 pages long. Beginners will for sure be frustrated but I think if you take your time and break it down by section it will come (says the girl who can't do a regular E chord). I just wish that the chord diagrams were included - I'll have to get a chord chart to go along with the book but I'm really looking forward to getting into this.

Yeah, I'm not too happy considering I knew I wouldn't get the Amazon one before a trip I have planned. So I spoke with them before I ordered it and was told it was in stock and would definitely be shipping yesterday. This is precisely the point I tried to get across to Jake years ago when we first started talking about doing a book of transcriptions. He just didnít see a big enough demand for it. I told him people would buy the book just to have it whether they had the skills currently to play the songs or not. Jake is even more popular today and more people than ever are picking up the uke after seeing him perform. I think he is going to be pleasantly surprised by how well this book sells.

Originally, the idea was to create new arrangements specifically for the book that would be complete with an intro, main song and an ending. As the review on Amazon suggests the book is not dumbed-down or simplified. If I was Jake I would start working immediately on another book with newly created easier arrangements of different songs (maybe some of the same ones) for those that arenít ready for the advanced arrangements. I think it would sell like hot cakes.

I don't know why I'm surprised. Jake is a virtuoso, and this book is a note-for-note transcription of how he plays it. Being that I am not a virtuoso, I mostly find myself trying a section and saying "Holy crap, how many fingers does this guy have?!".

I'm sure others will have better luck. It's still something for me to practice bits and pieces of.

I was trying Hallelujah and I can't believe he has a 9 - 5 - 2 fingering pattern. I would hate to take a pic of my face as I attempt to play that chord on a tenor uke. I have to pause, press the uke against my chest to put enough force to barely make an audible sound.

I have trouble with that stretch also. This is where you need to come up with something that sounds good that doesn't require the stretches. I don't have time to search for it but if you search Youtube for ukejon he has a video of Hallelujah and he had just broken his left hand wrist and he plays a fantastic version of it with minimal stretching. Worth a look see when you have time.

I totally agree - Jake is so hot right now he could sell ice to Eskimos!!!! Seriously, easier arrangements would be encouraging to beginners who pick up a uke after seeing him.....and us oldies as well!!!!

Maybe he could do covers of popular songs with his special style on it, Taylor Swift, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Buffett, Zac Brown Band, and others would be great.

I think his arrangements are something to work up to. I've only been playing a few months if that. I can't do those stretches but I'm getting better by working through a fingerstyle book. (http://amzn.to/Aq9ry1) I can play things I didn't play a month ago, so it's a slow but patient process. Maybe in a year or two.

I haven't really sat down and tried to learn any of the songs yet, but I'm thrilled with the book so far. It's nice to have around, even if I won't be able to play through all of them for awhile :P

I was trying to plink my way through that (it's way beyond me but I wanted to try anyway because I love that song) and I got to that part and thought, "You gotta be KIDDING!". I couldn't even reach it on my Peanut. Maybe some day....or....maybe I could get a sopranino!

I haven't had much time looking at it yet, but on some songs he has split the arrangement into 2 parts for 2 ukes. I have seen him perform Five Dollars Unleaded as solo ukulele piece.. so maybe he figures we would have a better chance if it was divided up.

From the Amazon description; Our sought-after songbook features note-for-note transcriptions with ukulele tablature of Jake's masterful playing on all the CD tracks.

Loving the new book. Just finished learning 143 (Kelly's song) which I strongly recommend as a first song to learn for those of you in the thread nervous about not having the skills to play Jake tunes-- it is quite straightforward and only took me a few hours to learn. Piano Forte and Bohemian Rhapsody are also surprisingly easy to play. There are a few big stretches in Piano Forte but its not that technically difficult other than that, and Bohemian Rhapsody isn't hard at all it's just really long so will be tough to memorize. Im about to sink my teeth into WMGGW this afternoon-- wish me luck!

The book got here about an hour ago. I've been reading through Variation on a Dance 2010, Pianoforte 2010, Hallelujah, and WMGGW. There are some challenging stretches and of course tremendous rhythmic and technique challenges that will take serious work to make playable, but what a gas! Great arranging makes sense when you play through it and it lies under your fingers and on the instrument so well. Thank you Jake for making this available.

Just got home from work and my book was waiting for me. I've glanced thru it and will mess with it some after while. From the looks of it messing with it will be all I'll be doing tho. Bohemian rhapsody was the first ukulele song I had ever heard when I saw Jake do it and that's what made me start playing ukulele. That song was a huge hit when I was like 15 yrs old back in 1975 and it was my favorite at that time. I'll give it a try but I don't know it may take me a few years of uke playing before I can take it on. It's just cool having this book and the added bonus is that I didn't know While My Guitar Gently Weeps was in this book not that I would ever be able to play it.

I sat down with while my guitar gently weeps for a few minutes and you know I thinks it's going to be doable. It's just going to take a lot of concentration and practice. Im getting ready to head back to it now and spen a little time with it. The only downer about the book is that the tab is so small that it's difficult to see for me anyway. Hard to get my tri focals lined up with it.

I've been slowly getting Pianoforte 2010 down - it's tough but like you said above doable and I'm taking it a section at a time.

I gotta say I'm envious of all of you. There's just no way I could make heads or tails of it. My fingers just can't move like that. If anyone in here can get through more than a line of it, my hats off to you! A lot of great uke players in these parts!

Well, at least I "play" the DVDs. "That's all I've got to say about that."

Give it another chance. I don't consider myself that good of a player but Piano Forte really isn't that bad as long as your hands are big enough for some of the stretches (I think thats the song you were talking about). Are you fingerpicking or just with your thumb?

+1, take your time and if you can't make the stretch then just finger it slowly and you will get it up to speed. 143 is a great song to strum (although to get to Jake's warp speed will take me some time) and I'm learning lots of new chords.

I haven't bought this book yet knowing that my uke skill is not ready for most of the songs. But I will get it very soon just in case some day I will be able to play a couple lines of some song. I would be thrilled just to be able to play a line or two of "Go For Broke" and "Piano Forte". Those are my favorite.

But I wondered if Jake's songs require a tenor, or a soprano or concert are also acceptable. Given that I only have a soprano and a concert, in other words, to get this book and play those songs, do I need to buy a new uke?

Well, one can never have enough ukes........;)

However, you don't need one just for the book. I have been working on Pianoforte and just about have it - it's not at Jake's tempo but it sounds good. There are a few stretches but they are easily overcome with some practice and I'm really enjoying learning a new song.

My only complaint of the book is there are no pictures of the chords above the musical staff, just the name. I really think it makes it so much easier to learn if the pics are there because it is better for pattern recognition. I am scanning them into my computer, editing them to have blank chord diagrams above each chord and drawing them in myself but its a total PITA. I never understood why this isnt a standard feature of all tab books

I'd like to learn and play Pianoforte, but just wanted to make sure that my concert uke has enough frets for the song :)

That must be why I got mine so quickly, doesn't have to travel far does it. And I get to see Jake live in March, living in Minnesota does have it's benefits.

Pianoforte goes up to the 13th fret.

You can play Jake's songs on any sized ukulele. It's actually easier to play some of them that have huge finger stretches, such as Piano Forte, on a concert or soprano. I think most of his arrangements don't go past the 15th or 16th fret, but some do use up to the 18th fret, so you'll want to have as many frets as possible in some cases.

I'd swear Jake played right off the end of the fretboard in concert. He had to be finding notes well over the soundhole.
Anyone else see that?

Received my copy yesterday!

When did you order yours? my patience is wearing thin :(

Ground Loop, are you referring to Jake's performance of "Let's dance"? That's the only performance where I've seen him go past the fret board (The part that I am talking about is in the intro.)

I've been working on while my guitar gently weeps and just have the you tube of the song. I went to FYE to buy the Jake CD and they didn't have it nor had they ever heard of him. Do I need to just check amazon and get it from there? I wonder why they didn't have it.
