Haven't been on the board in a while, was busy making my son a LesPaul guitar but was getting stuff together to make a pair of ukes and realized it was a royal pain hand sanding for thickness. Having a very small space to work with and not a big budget I looked into making my own thickness sander. I modified one I saw pictures of on the web and built this for $80. I had a roll of 120grit paper so used that but I will replace it with self adhesive 80 grit made for drum sanders.
My test strip of purple heart had a variance of +/-0.0015 I was happy with that, if and when it goes out of true you just stick a flat board with some sandpaper on it through the machine a few times and it trues right up. 1/2hp 1750rpm motor 2"-4"pulley making drum speed around 1000rpm. I left so bar sticking out the side and will put a bushing on it to bring it up to 3/4" so I can put some buffing pads on it.
