I'm a noob also, just do what I do: sing the song and the strum is obvious (I use a D/U/D/U). This isn't a song where you should overthink things...

No no no, follow the lyrics and chords as chindog shows. The pasted in text has shifted over the chord changes a bit.
First line is all C chord (D/U D/U etcetera)
2nd line: At "Short" it's a C. At "Stout" change to G.
3rd line: "Here" is D7. "Handle" is a G.
Follow that pattern. At least that's how *I* do it.
