I have been wanting to put a low G uke string on my tenor ukulele but they don't have any in stock in my local music stores. I saw somewhere else in the thread that I could use another C string and just tune that down to G? However, I use a guitar string for my C in the first place.

Do you have any classical guitar strings, the classical G will be fine. Just check the nut for no pinching.

The classical guitar g string is normally unwound. For those that prefer wound strings, the d string can be used for low g on the ukulele.

If you want to try a wound low G, I recommend the D'Addario Pro Arte J4304. This is a nylon classical guitar D string, wrapped with silver-plated copper. What distinguishes this string for low G is that it is "light tension" vs. normal or hard tension. The light tension makes it a little more mellow and softer, and therefore appropriate for ukulele. At least to my ears. And they're not very expensive. Just Strings has been selling this string for $.98.
