Played a new Mexican-made Martin S-1 at my local shop. Was not at all impressed with the sound. The build was nice and clean and the friction tuners appear to be better than the ones on my Mexican S-O but the sound was thin and unbalanced. It could have been old strings but my S-O sounded much better out of the box. I'm assuming they come with Martin Flurocarbons as standard.
Now have Worth Medium Browns on the S-O. Much mellower and balanced sound.
The store said they'll try to get a C1K in for me to try. Would consider one if it sounds good eventhough I prefer friction tuners.

I'm never been hugely impressed with Martin ukes, although I hear there's a generational gap in the sound. How do the older Martins compare?

I tried an S 1 and I thought it sounded alot like my SO . If I had a choice I would take the SO over the S 1 .
