"The 8th Season of the Ukulele" Contest : Easter week
since no one else is stepping up, I'll take it.
Easter is Sunday, so an Easter song ,religious or secular. Easter is only 4 days away so let's make the deadline the beginning of the 2nd Sunday of Easter, that would be 12 midnight. I won't be picky on the time as long as it's in by Sunday morning[4-15-12], that will give me time Sunday to judge. if anyone else wants to co judge, let me know.
Prizes, one set Tenor Hilo strings [low G]
one set D'Addario t2 concert strings [high g]
1st place winner gets 1st choice
2nd place gets other set.
3rd place gets a hearty "well done"
for rules and judging criteria see 7th season of the Ukulele contest., the Ukulele should be front and center. Bunny costume optional.
good luck. just post your videos to this thread.

when you say "easter song," do you also mean basically any song that could possibly be sung in a church on a Sunday? Or does it have to specifically contain the words "easter," or "bunny?"

by Easter song I mean a song that would be appropriate for Easter season for example
religious- Christ the Lord is risen today
secular - The Song of the Easter Bunny
it does not have to contain the words Easter or bunny etc.

so, would a spring song satisfy the requirements seeing that the easter season is at the same time of year as the rites of spring and
spring equinox, and...., there are more songs to chose from? just wondering!

Hi there,
what if it contains the word "Easter" in the title but is not thematically an Easter song?

I don't even know what that means. assume if the song even vaguely has some connection to Spring or Easter it is OK.
AND before anyone asks, enter as often as you wish, I'll judge your Last entry for the contest.

Thanks, I'll take any bonus I can get, and use my "first" status as an excuse for my first take performance.
It's a Mainland Bari, and it has the strings from Guadalupe that tune up an octave BELOW a low G set.
It's a whole different instrument strung that way.

Beloff's Daily Ukulele came through with an idea---a lovely Irving Berlin song. And I played a pretty pink ukulele in hopes of reminding y'all of Easter baskets, bunnies, and candy.

surprise to win the "Woody Week"... did I just say that?
Sounds risque now that I read it :-)

Anyways looks like Christian has started a great UU tradition,

Having done a serious song for Easter (Jerusalem Tomorrow) there needs to be
some checks and balances so here is a little Bunny song (Run Rabbit Run) I recorded with my
granddaughter Elli whilst over in the UK last week.

It involves a hand-puppet, a distorted mirror, and is no more than a compilation of errors,
but sometimes the mistakes are better than a perfect performace. For your amusement only.

Well I had the idea that tricksters usually have to hide behind some sort of mask,
and those blood red dogwood branches happened to be in the house for Easter
so I positioned the camera behind them... trying to give the impression that
something is being hidden here.

Wow what a compliment :o thanks so much Peewee, to be compared to the legendary Ian Dury, unfortunately i was born and raised in rural essex, my dads generation were the last to have the local accent as after the war many massive new towns were built to accomadate the homeless from london due to the bombing and hence we lost our country accent :(,

Hey Eugene, that you continually succeed in blowing almost everyone out of the water, and your recent spike in bluesy-ness are reminding me of Robert Johnson's alleged transaction. Have you been down to the crossroads? Have you been dealing with devils, Tasmanian or otherwise? Trading Mya Moes for mad skills?
Probably just talent, practice and time, but you make it look so easy, it seems like like you're cheating! Nice work as always.

Well...I was planning on doing "He's Alive" but I am going to have to face the fact that my voice just can't go there anymore. I used to be able to sing that with guitar but my vocal chords just won't stretch enough to even get close to the finale of that song anymore and it just doesn't sound right if you omit the key change.

Oh well, maybe somebody who actually has a voice will do it - 'cause I still love the song.

I was trying to decide what to do instead and I think I'm going to do an original. It's not a traditional Easter song by any means, and could be kind of a downer, even, but I think I'm going to do it anyway as the message fits in an oddball kind of way. I wrote it about five years ago and forgot about it until I was poking around my leadsheet files trying to figure out what to do instead of He's Alive.

So, as soon as I get a piece of peace and quiet I'll whip out a video.

Great stuff so far, y'all.

I love that we've got one bunny song that's rated G (nice one, ukuleledaveey!), another that's rated PG for violence (my wife loved this one, too, wee_ginga_yin), and a third that could be rated R or X, depending on editing, for explicit sexual content (sweet version peewee, you dirty indie rocker, you).

Also loved "Jerusalem Tomorrow". Thanks for the wonderful introduction to David Olney's work, Rob, he's great. And of course another classic from eugene ukulele Jon---we need that soul this time of year. Thanks.

Plus I'm looking forward to austin1's seasonal debut. It'll be great to have another seasoning in the mix.

Oh, that reminds me... Anyone reading this thread that hasn't participated yet? We would love to hear from you.

Thankyou guys for all your kind words to me about this song. For the record, I discovered it yesterday and this performance blew my mind. It's Ry Cooder and David Lindley at New Orleans Jazz Fest in '94, backed by a hot trio of gospel singers. Unbelievable stuff. Some songs just hit you right between the eyes and this one sure didn't miss me. Felt compelled to learn it and try to play it straight away...he he...I think I pressed replay for like an hour...

Nice job mate and a good dose of dry humour thrown in to boot. :) You mentioned Son House...the version I know best is Blind Willie Johnson's from the Harry Smith Anthology of Folk Music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hucTDV1Fvo&feature=related both incredible. Happy Easter mate :)

peewee's first take went up first; here's my second take.

Beloff's Daily Ukulele came through with an idea---a lovely Irving Berlin song. And I played a pretty pink ukulele in hopes of reminding y'all of Easter baskets, bunnies, and candy.

Hi All

Can't resist posting another one. Can you tell I'm supposed to be working on my taxes?
This one is heavy on the adult innuendo. Easter and Spring Festivals in general are really about fecundity though, right?
"Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits" by The Magnetic Fields.
The instrumental break needs a lot of work. enjoy
and congrats to ReaderMo

Hey Eugene, that you continually succeed in blowing almost everyone out of the water, and your recent spike in bluesy-ness are reminding me of Robert Johnson's alleged transaction. Have you been down to the crossroads? Have you been dealing with devils, Tasmanian or otherwise? Trading Mya Moes for mad skills?
Probably just talent, practice and time, but you make it look so easy, it seems like like you're cheating! Nice work as always.
ha ha peewee...not sure about a trip to the crossroads but I feel like I've had a couple of 'crossroad' experiences in the last 6 or 8 months which maybe have drawn me to the blues. Really it's been watching drbekken on youtube...the way he does it so effortlessly has inspired me and motivated me heaps. But yeah, I've never understood anything about the blues or how it's meant to be played, but I feel em, so it's nice at the moment to learn something new and try to broaden the musical palette a bit and play in a different way. Long way to go. Cheers mate.

Thanks for the kind words. I'd love to hear your take on that song..and that's the 1920s Koa Style 1 Martin there. It doesn't see the light of day much, I'm still kind of intimidated by it, and while it has a stellar sound it's not the easiest to play, with low bar frets, a soprano scale, and the strings a little closer together than on later Martins. I pull it out every once in a while to see if I am good enough to really play it yet..I'm definitely not.

Ralf, You're right of course, but my grandfather was an early victim of UAS, and so I have his even older Mahogany style 0 "beater" to practice on that has exactly the same geometry!

Great week of entries! It's unlikely I'll be able to get one in this week. It's simply been crazy (out of town earlier in the week, in-laws staying with us, found our "dream house" and will likely put in an offer tomorrow, a big show to get ready for, not to mention Easter). I'm so glad to this continuing and more people getting involved!

Thanks Jon, Ralf & Nickie, for your wonderful words, it really means a great deal to me and helps stroke the ol' fragile ego :).
I think the reason i look deadpan is a mixture of nerves and concentrating on the song and the fact i am not comfortable my neighbours can hear me through the paper thin walls, but if it looks good in the performance that is a added bonus :)
Well the Hat was meant to be my nod to the great Elmer Thudd and bugs battles, i was going to open the song with the words in elmer speak " SSSSssssshhhhhh I'm hunting wabbit's ", but as well yep I think Ralf should get a bonus point as well as in the end i thought just put the flaps down as bunny ears and wear a daffodil in the hat for spring :) loved all your entries to guys :)

it may be a slow process, but it is an excellent skill to develop. what song were you looking for the chords for?

austin1
04-07-2012, 05:31 AM
It's from a musical, which means that the chords are a major flat sevens add nines, with all sorts of arbitrary symbols tagged onto the end of them for good measure.

Hey Tina i am pretty certain there is nothing in the rules saying that you cannot do the song as well, it happenend in the six seasons a couple of times ,people doing the same song, and it is interesting to see different interpretations of the same song, so if you wanna do the song im pretty certain it would be ok. :)

The baritone is here, and I am re-learning one of the songs I thought I'd try for this contest on it. But so, I just tried to record, and after 45 failed takes, gave up for today. So here's the other song. First take on a soprano. Chocolate Jesus by Tom Waits. Apologies in advance for anyone who might take offense, but it is a satire of the commercialization of the holiday -- so you know, there's that.

Well, that's that then. Consider this one the final entry.

What's the story with multiple entries? WHich one will you pick? I'm torn between two VERY different songs. I finally got the other recorded after multiple takes. MULTIPLE takes. And still not perfect, but it's on the bari, and well, I just don't know! I'm going to post it anyway, and then I'll tell strum silly which one I want him to consider, I guess.

Anyway, here it is. Pilate's Dream from Jesus Christ Superstar. On the new baritone.

After many many takes, here's my entry for this week. It's gonna need some more work before it's live performance ready, but give me a couple dozen tries and I'll eventually get through it without a major mistake.

Thanks Davey! :)
I'm pleased with this particular rendition. Just not pleased with the fact that it took about 15 attempts to achieve it. This song's now on my long-term "keep practicing it" list.

j-peg, that was great! i have not even attempted finger picking yet...i am pretty sure that requires a lot more talent than i could master! i am just a glorified strummer...at best!
but, the song sounded great!

side note...as for a future season competition....a "real" one take....on your honor...first take, one take...warts and all..screw up, keep on going!
usually takes me about 20-30 takes to get it right as i can..might be fun to see the bloopers and continuing on!
just a thought! happy strumming! or picking for you j-peg!

Yes it was, perry Farrell. I love Janes Addiction and have seen them now at least 10 times in concert two times this last year!! He got JA back together not the original but still really great performances!!

Ah, catching up on the 8th Season...

mattydee: Great song choices this week, especially Pilate's Dream---great singing, nice picking. Heavy, baby. Nice work with the new instruments---baritone uke and mouth trumpet---too. Maybe we should start a mouth brass band?

J-Peg: Lovely version of a wonderful song---very nice work playing those leads. It's always nice to hear George Harrison's music on the ukulele, too. Gracias.

glass: Nice one. I liked Jane's Addiction a lot, but Perry Farrell's personality and singing both grossed me out at a 1990 Jane's Addiction show. Your sweet version of this tune didn't gross me out at all, in fact I liked it. You're good. You've convinced me to give Perry another chance.

Great vids, everyone! Hopefully, we'll get another couple entries today. Thanks again, strumsilly, for keeping it going!! See y'all over at the Ninth Season.

Woohoo, Matty! A sweet new baritone uke and a sweet victory all in one week. Nicely done, sir. Congratulations!

Congrats, J-Peg, and thanks for bringing us some sunshine.

Congrats to all y'all for being a courageous group of challenge-accepting ukulele bad-asses. See y'all in the ninth week!

Wow! Thanks, strumsilly! And everyone! I sure am glad to have broken the Bari in on this one! And now I can barely put it down. I went out of town this weekend and for a little variety (and portability), I brought the sopranino, but it's just not the same! I missed that big ol' guy with his different chord fingerings and deep voice!

Gosh, that was a lot of exclamation points. On to sunshine and smiles...

Congrats, mattydee! One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite shows, a great fit for both your voice and for the bari, and you executed it brilliantly.

I can live with second place.

This week. But just wait...
