Hi,

I'm new into the world of ukulele and I'm really enjoying it (basic strumming that is at the moment).

Today I received my Kala KA-ASAC-T from Southern Ukuleles in the UK. It's my 2nd uke (I had a Fender Hau'Oli). I didn't notice it for the first few hours, until I started looking at other reviews (again), but it seems I've an updated version of this uke.

What has changed:
- The bridge is different; also how the strings are attached to the bridge.
- The binding has changed. It seems to be acacia too and not rosewood.

Has anyone else the same version of the Kala? Do you notice any other differences? I've added some pictures to this post.

I'm very happy with my 'updated' version and like the changes and it sounds great!

BTW: the website of Southern Ukuleles still shows the original pictures.

Don't shoot my playing.. I'm only playing the uke for a month now. The recording quality is mediocre.

Congrats! That's a beautiful one, love the grain and color of the wood.
I never looked close enough to tell if the bridge looks different but I do think it's possible that the binding is rosewood, it comes in a lot of different shades from light to dark.
Either way, you got a nice one there, enjoy! :)

Wow, nice. And it's a Kala. They just keep getting better all the time. Confounds me, the Chinese... Congratulations!

Thanks for your replies! I'm very pleased with the Kala KA-ASAC-T. This one resonates much better than my Fender (plywood) and has the typical uke sound that the Fender misses. I chose the Kala, because it looks a lot like the Hawaiian made K-brands, but at a very friendly price.

I definitely wanted a slotted headstock and the looks of the Kala are just great: beautiful solid acacia wood, the herringbone inlays, Grover tuners, and a bridge that doesn't look too intrusive. I'm pleased that it also sounds as good as it looks. I just can't stop practicing now!

It's supposed to represent a Kamaka tie bridge. Whether or not Kamaka invented it I don't know

This sounds like enough justification to purchase another one.....

better than old one.
i wish kala make gloss version

i have the concert size with the same bridge. how the heck do you re-string this bridge?

i bought some Worth Browns because I heard they make this uke louder and I don't know how to tie them in!
Best help I can offer is check out that bridge close up pic... slide thru one hole, loop right over the top, slide thru other hole, then slide under the loop...

These things look great and have read great things. If I sell my pono I think this would be its replacement.

I got mine a couple of months ago and it has the same 8 hole bridge. It really is a great uke for the money. Although, the K-brands keep calling to me... something to look forward too, I guess! Enjoy!!

With this type of bridge, you can still do a standard classical tie, if you wish. This seems a lot easier, though.

I changed my strings to D'Addario Pro Arte J71 last night. It was really easy with this bridge. Start with the G string and you can't go wrong if you do it exactly as shown in my pics. The A string is the only one that needs a knot at the end.

Ps. I'll update this review to a more mature one soon, with a sound sample (also compared to my laminated Fender).

Well, it seems like I have the updated version too. :)

I would like to hear a sound sample with your new strings, I'm thinking about changing the Aquila strings to some other strings.

I find the D'Addario strings softer/smoother and more accurate to my fingers. The sound is a little warmer and clearer. It resonates better.

Thanks for the samples! Really nice sound you've got there, I'm gonna order these now from the UU store. :)

EDIT: They're ordered!
