View Full Version : "Ninth Season of the Ukulele" contest: SMILES AND SUNSHINE

TheOnlyUkeThatMatters

Here's another Seasons of the Ukulele challenge. Woot woot. Remember, you need not have participated in any previous Seasons challenge to pariticipate in this one. Please join in! We love new faces and voices in the Seasons threads.

The Challenge

We have a long, rainy spring here in Portland. Most days, it's both sad and dark. To help brighten things up, perform a song whose lyrics mention "smiles" or "sunshine" ("smile", "smiled", "smiling", "sunny", "sun-shiny", "the sun is shining", or the like will work, of course.)

Prizes

1st prize: Mahalo Smiley Face ukulele (Notice it's yellow, like a cartoon sun.)
2nd prize: Your choice of two sets of strings (or one set of Worth strings) from Ukulele Republic.

Rules

To enter, post a YouTube performance video as a reply to this thread by the DEADLINE: 11:59 PM HAWAII TIME, SUNDAY APRIL 22.
Each submission must be a single-take, no cuts, and must have a spoken reference to this contest as an introduction.
Judging criteria are
(a) playing,
(b) singing,
(c) spark/passion/personality,
(d) originality/creativity,
(e) setting/framing/lighting, and
(f) je ne sais quoi.
Your UPA (Ukulele Point Average) will be the numerical average of scores (from 0 to 4) for each of the criteria, given as follows:
4 - "Wow, this couldn't be better."
3 - "This is great."
2 - "Good."
1 - "Hmm, there's an issue here."
0 - "Ouch."
You and your ukulele should be the focus of your performance, but feel free to have friends and family join in, using any instruments at hand. No over-dubs allowed, though.
If you'd like do an instrumental this week, go for it. It'll need smiles or sunshine (or the like) in its title or lyrics, and a "melody" score will replace your "singing" score.
You may submit as many videos as you like. If you don't specify which is your entry in the thread, your most recent entry will be your submission.
The following group of great people will judge your submission: dkcrown (UU member and proud supporter), Mike McQueen (UU member and Ukulele Republic proprieter), moi, my lovely wife (a discerning music listener), and a Surprise Judge (to be recruited this week, perhaps from UU, perhaps not).

I'll make a traditional Seasons judge's feedback video once I've had a chance to digest all the entries.

Have fun, everyone. Looking forward to a smiley, sunny week of music with y'all!

SO up high, you come across the occasional bluebird!

I guess it doesn't contain the word "sun" per se, but it is implied in the creation of said rainbow you are somewhere over :D

Welp, the chorus doesn't mention smiles or sunshine, but the (seldom performed) introduction sure does. You'll just need to include that intro. Aha, a challenge!

(If you don't have access to sheets for the intro, I could scan them and email them your way. You might need to do some transposing to use them. Aha, another challenge!)

When all the world
Is a hopeless jumble
And the raindrops tumble
All around
Heaven opens a magic lane...

(I love the old verses that no one uses any more. That's why I did the one from Pennies from Heaven in the 6 seasons. They're so so good!)

Great idea Ralph! Living in Portland as well, I'm bummed I've been inside with my family through the past few sunny days here. We're all still sick! Hopefully I'll be feeling better soon (just the Portland rains come down again?) to post my video. I'd hate to miss this one!

Cool, Phil!

I just spent the last two hours writing an original just for the contest. Sometimes the muse strikes with the wierdest things...

Now all I have to do is find some quiet time to record it between now and next weekend.

Sometimes I think if I were any more laid back I would be comatose.
I think I was more influence by the Judy Garland (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utt7NfJjiKc) version than the
Willie Nelson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2dXXf0yFMQ) :old:

Though it would be wonderful to swing it like Dizzy Gillespie. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8UEGmAvWfM)

Thanks John :) yeah i have always loved that song, every time i hear it, it takes me back to when i was a toddler in my parents house playing my mums LPs. I didnt realise it was originally a french poem, recorded my a belgium singer, and the beachboys did a version but didnt want to release it, and terry jacks wrote some new words and loved it, he was involved with the beach boys, i got all this off wikipedia, so hopefully its right, looking forward to your entry John :)

I'm trying to upload my entry to youtube, but it's not working for whatever reason. I hit "select files from computer", then my file, but then nothing happens. Anyone know how to bend youtube to my will?

edit: just kidding, I switched back to the old upload page, and it worked. Adding my entry to the melee! It contains a million and a half mistakes, but I got tired of irritating the neighbors.

Very good rendition. I'm not sure I ever really listened to the words of that one, I have always been too mesmerized by the trippy production - certainly a fitting tune, and kind of the exact opposite sentiment of Who Loves the Sun

Mattydee: some constructive criticism, don't be so shy, you need to come out of your shell a little. If you would learn to project your voice and maybe smile some.:D

...I'm totally being sarcastic, that was quite a performance I am agog at a solo uke player pulling off that song. You must have musical theater chops, right?

OKay...looking ahead...somebody has already claimed week 10, am I right? How about weeks 11 & 12? I.e. how long are we covered?

Maybe the folks that have already laid claim to week 10, 11, etc. should create "placeholder" threads just so we'll know those weeks are claimed. No need to announce contest details because we don't want to detract from the current week, but it lets everybody know which weeks are covered.

And, in case you haven't figured it out, yes, I'm throwing my hat in the ring to host one of these shin-digs. I just need to know what week to claim. :)

Okay, I know I said I was going to do a song about smiles. And I know we're supposed to do shiny happy fluffy warm and fuzzy songs about smiles and sunshine and puppies and kittens and rainbows and butterflies and unicorns that fart glitter. And I intended to do just that. But I just couldn't make that work for me this week. It's not that I'm depressed or anything. I just had to do this bluesy thing this week. Maybe I used up all my happy last week. Maybe I need my doctor to adjust my meds (again.) Maybe my muse has PMS this week. I dunno. All I know is whenever I picked up my uke to try and find a sunny smiley song, this not-quite-so-happy song would jump up, grab me by the shirt front and say "JOE!! PLAY ME!!"
So what else could I do?

I tend to get hired for more straight plays these days, but periodically, I get the chance to flex some musical theater muscles, yes. As it happens, a play I'm doing in October will require a bit of song and a bit of dance, and I'm pretty sure I'll be playing a fair bit of uke in it as well!

And thanks, everybody for the kind words this week. It was easily the most fun I've had in all these nine weeks of contests! Thanks again, Ralf.

Wow! FANTASTIC entries so far guys(and Tina). Great originals and new renditions while placing your own personal stamp on a song. I am duly impressed.

Bill Withers! Who would have thunk it? (I guess Joe)

In this time of sickening political correctness, maybe everyone should win and get a trophy,(or in this case, a smiley Mahalo)

Here is my last minute entry. Was going to do "Blister in the Sun" but I was too nervous since this is the first time i've ever made a video of myself, and glass beat me to it :p... but here's my second choice: "Pocketful of Sunshine" by Natasha Bedingfield, has smiles, sun and sunshine!

Thanks everyone for the inspiration! :o

Mina that sounded great, didn't know that song, it suits you really well, great work! And it's nice to see a little more estrogen around here.

Be sure to double check that your video's on the playlist, since it is going to the judges (two of whom aren't UU members). Judges will be asked to submit score sometime this week---but I'll stress they should take as much time as they need to do a good job. I'll get a response video up as soon as I can.

Prithee hast thine merriment in yon Tenth Season, anon!

The judging process is still on-going, y'all. Five judges is great mathematically---lots of different scores---but all five need to find enough time to do a good job. Your continued patience is much-appreciated.

All my video-making time this week was consumed by mattydee's two challenges. I'll get a response video up by Tuesday.

I truly don't know what to say except that I can't believe it! Thank you so much Ralf for this great contest and what an amazing prize! I've always entered these contests simply to have fun and connect with the ukulele community, and hopefully learn something along the way. I certainly never had any aspirations to win a ukulele, and week 9 was no exception. I honestly almost didn't enter after seeing some of the incredible entries that preceded mine. I don't always get a chance to watch every video and/or comment on them but this group of people lifts me up every week. You have all inspired me and I look forward to this wonderful community continuing as the "Seasons" contests move forward!

Thanks again Ralf. I hope you and I can team up again sometime. And, Jon, yes that will make a wonderful instrument to get my daughters involved in music. If these contests continue, maybe we can all look forward to their own entries some day!

Great job on a great song, as usual. However, two things occur to me. First thought: a dentist chair for "smiles week" - unless you're a dentist that is really going the extra mile for a video. Second thought: if this is your idea of "a little bit late," remind me not to make an appointment with you... :)
