It may sound funny but it really is about a time when there was a major food shortage for the Southern armies, especially any in the area where Sherman had marched from Atlanta to Savannah and onward. What he did was an early version of the concept of total war. Civilians became targets in World War II, somewhat in Europe but majorly in the Pacific Theater during the firebombing of Japan.
