Wow, interesting theme. I guess the first step is ruling out the songs I'm crazy to even consider. One of my favorite bands is this '70s progressive rock band from Italy called Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM). One of these days I'm going to cover one of their songs. But it won't be this more recent song from 2002 called "La Rivoluzione". I looked up the lyric sheet and "Oh my God, this song has THIS MANY lyrics?" Let alone that they're in Italian, and I don't speak Italian. Now to get real and go back through my iTunes library.

Gentile pubblico stasera siamo qua
Per un'ottima ragione
Da questa notte finalmente inizierà
la rivoluzione
Perché faremo briciole dell'immobilità
Saremo come la salsedine che la divorerà
e se sarà impossibile combattere
cambieremo regole
perché la regola sarà
Mai! Mai! Senza saltare Mai!
Mai! Mai! Senza ballare Mai!
Allora sarà splendido sentire intorno a te
Restando seduti i vostri orizzonti rimangono bassi
e poi saltando si sciolgono i grassi
Mai! Mai! Senza saltare Mai!
Mai! Mai! Senza ballare Mai!
Salta ancora una volta
qualcuno ci ascolta
è sempre così… si può
contare un'ora, un giorno, un anno
un lungo inverno e non stancarsi mai
E come sempre la festa sarà
di un leggerissimo uccello che va
Vola più in alto, libero ah
Gentile pubblico stasera siamo qua
per un'unica ragione
saltare saltare saltare
saltare saltare saltare
finché la voglia ci deve passare
Salta ancora una volta
qualcuno ci ascolta
è sempre così… si può
contare un'ora, un giorno, un anno
un lungo inverno e non stancarsi mai
Salta ancora una volta ................................................(r isposta) E non stancarsi mai

ukuleledaveey, this is a great contest, just last week I was trying to think of a subject that almost all styles of music and musicians would have in common, this is pretty much what I had in mind except in my head I was calling it "Stick-It-To-Man" week... lol... pretty close though :)

I made a million mistakes and manage to look really, really awkward while doing it, but here's my entry:

I first heard this song done by Harry Belafonte (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JR08QzzD-VI) back in the 60's
His approach to it was more like a sledge-hammer busting rocks
in the noon-day sun when on the chain-gang. I can well imagine it
as a chain-gang song

A much rawer approach than Ms Baez. It is a fantastic old gospel song.
Oh, Freedom is a post cival war freedom song, notably associated with Odetta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okGZlbEBMRI)
Now there was a woman with an noble spirt.

Yeah, I listened to like, seven thousand different versions, and then they all sort of fused together in my brain, and my weird little version came out. My sorry little try holds absolutely nothing to all the brilliant folk versions that are out there!

Don't be so hard on yourself Tina, that was a really beautiful and sensitive performance.
You have such a lovely voice...your version would sit comfortably next to Joan Baez' on my playlist, no probs mate :)

I thought your version was just fine. Your voice is crystal clear just like Ms. Baez
God I used to love that woman when she sung Dylan songs. The diction
and enunciation were just perfect and with the roughness of the Dylan vocals gone
you could actually understand what a song was all about.

I only mentioned Belafonte and Odetta because the song belongs to the Afro American
tradition, and for me at least they are locked into a cultural and historical perspective,
that gives a certain gravitas, to their performance of spirituals.

My best to you.

For this week, I have another Midnight Oil song. This song has a weird riff that alternates between bars of 8 and 7 beats, with one bar of 6 thrown in before it goes into another part of the song. So when the time signature seems weird and screwy, just remember -- I meant to do that!

As far as you know.

Lubbly gubbly... and nice to see the delightful Fiona D. back in the picture.
That attacking strum was viscous... sounded like you were being very war-like
and that percussive snap was as though you were cutting the strings with a switchblade.

Did I just slip into Ronglish there???

when i play i often make faces and shrug my shoulders, bob my head and grimace ect. and i have the old lazy eye doing its own thing and i end up looking like marty feldman playing a video game. it distracts me.

Here's my Revolution Entry!

http://youtu.be/DrxHSYWNnC0

Originally by Leon Rosselson: http://youtu.be/PCXnol8NGbg
His version is very “A Mighty Wind”

Here's the only version I knew before I started researching the song, Ukuleledavey's Essex homeboy, Billy Bragg: http://youtu.be/LK2ldle1kAk

Dick Gaughan: http://youtu.be/XWzzvnPOyTM

Chumbawumba http://youtu.be/JEv3LpXNX8U

Could mine be the first version with a US accent?
Also let's please consider this a musical exercise and not a political one, I don't want to get into a big kerfuffle here.

"The World Turned Upside Down" by Leon Rosselson, 1975, a song about the Diggers and their activities on St. George's Hill in 1649; this song was performed by Billy Bragg on his Between the Wars EP, 1985; by Dick Gaughan on Handful of Earth, 1981; by Chumbawumba on the b-side of their single "Timebomb," 1993; by Attila the Stockbroker with Barnstormer on The Siege of Shoreham, 1996; by Clandestine, a Houston-based Celtic group, on their To Anybody At All album, 1999; by the Fagans, an Australian folk group, on their album, Turning Fine, 2002; and by Seattle Celt-rock band Coventry on the album Red Hair and Black Leather, 2005.

Most people don't think about singing when they think about revolutions.
But song was the weapon of choice when, between 1986 and 1991,
Estonians sought to free themselves from decades of Soviet occupation.
During those years, hundreds of thousands gathered in public to sing forbidden
patriotic songs and to rally for independence. "The young people, without any
political party, and without any politicians, just came together ... not only tens
of thousands but hundreds of thousands ... to gather and to sing and
to give this nation a new spirit," remarks Mart Laar, a Singing Revolution leader
featured in the film and the first post-Soviet Prime Minister of Estonia.
"This was the idea of the Singing Revolution." James Tusty and Maureen Castle Tusty's
"The Singing Revolution" tells the moving story of how the Estonian people peacefully
regained their freedom through song.

I never thought an Eddy Grant song could so..so..wee ginga yin! I looked at some period songs from the French, American and English revolutions, and considered trying a Tahrir square song. All were too much of a reach for me, good thinking going anti-apartheid. Lots of songs, and one of the revolutions that has turned out well. You perform it with the requisite gravitas and conviction. thanks

I had two other songs in mind Revolution by John Lennon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKB-w179PIQ)
and the best song ever written about freedom which would
need the skills of Mattydee to carry it off... the very poetic

Those are both great songs... And thanks for the kindness. Id love to give Chimes of Freedom a go, but I've been working on something else all week which has proven to be more complicated and difficult than I had anticipated. Which, you know, educationally: great. Artistically: not so sure. I think it could be cool if I can pull it off. We'll see.

What songs did other people consider and discard? At some point since last Saturday night, I tried playing at least once "The Power and the Passion" by Midnight Oil, "I Wanna Destroy You" by Robyn Hitchcock and the Soft Boys, "Yell Fire" by Michael Franti and Spearhead, "Showdown at Big Sky" by Robbie Robertson, and a truncated version of "The Knife" by Genesis. I went with the one that I had down best by the time I had quiet time at home to record video.

I was going to do Born to be Wild but some whippersnapper upstaged me with a better version. :) Gave a thought to Mellancamp's "Authority Song" but just couldn't get the right feel for it. It's looking like I might not get a chance to record between working crazy hours and formatting my bass lead sheets for the iPad. If I do it will be late tomorrow afternoon and probably be an original that I've been doodling with.

Finally got a chance to enjoy this week's entries. Here are a few notes I jotted down...

@Andy Saur - Welcome to the Seasons! A Jawaiian version of Steppenwolf's classic rebel rocker? Yep, that's cool. Very cool. The Lakers poster? Not so much.

@austin1 - Great choice, Tina. Nice, subtle dynamics happening here in both your playing and your singing here. Sweet.

@eor - Great rhythm playing here---soft and smooth. Sweet, sad song. Nice.

@uke4ia - More Midnight Oil---yes! That picked out melody sounds extra killer surrounded by your bad-ass strumming. You make me want to play my uke more loudly.

@eugene ukulele - Nice hats. Wait... are you and eugenie at thesillydave's house?! If you're in the States, y'all be sure to swing by my place (Oregon's on the way back to AU) so we can sing this one together. This sweet version will tide me over if you're not coming over.

@ukelites - Dang, left Ukelite, you've got some pipes. And right Ukelite, your leads are groovy. So glad y'all are sharing your stuff with us here at the Seasons of the Uke. Gracias.

@ukuleledaddy - With this camera angel, the Seasonists and Seasonistas can't see your tights and undies. Trust me, everyone, there's much more to this outfit. Nice version, Sean!

@peewee - Good one! Love that communist vibe!

@wee_ginga_yin - Thanks for sharing resources and for the reminder that singing (or speaking) the truth to power can change the world. Let's keep at it, everyone. Oh, and great playing and singing here, Rob, as usual. Muchas gracias.

@myrnaukulele - Great performance of a heavy song, and that baritone uke harmonizes so nicely with your voice. Nice.

@chrimess - Rage. Kazoo. U-bass. Banjolele. It's all here. Give this man a prize.

@benjouke - Great choice! "The Harder They Come" is one of my favorite rebel movies AND one of my favorite music movies. Thanks! Now I want to watch it and "Rockers".

Thanks again, ukuleledaveey, for hosting a great Season! Plenty of inspiration in this thread to keep me busy for weeks.

I have never heard that song before but it had that Georgie "I say yeah yeah" Fame vibe to it.
I will have to see if I can dig the original up on youtube... or is it an original... if so, it is too clever
for its wellington boots by half. You always do stuff with those jazz chords and it sounds so complicated
but when I look at the chord shapes they seem simple enough, so your playing skill shows through
in the effortless transitions.

I have a feeling I would get a blinding headache, even if I just tried to remember the names of those
chords you are playing. :old:

@thesillydave - Woohoo! Love. The. Clash. So sad that this song about resisting government-imposed censorship ended up being the soundtrack to two bombings of Middle East nations by the States. "Born In The USA" suffered a similar fate. Seems some songs of resistance easily become jingo-istic chants when folks ignore the verses. That's all an aside. Your "Rock the Casbah" is groovy---the roll strum gives it that thesillydave swing we've come to know and love. Nice dynamics, too. Cool.

@ukuloonie - Great to hear from you again here in the Seasons! Love the a cappella ending---focuses the ears on the message. Gracias.

I am about to send off the playlist to The Folk and their mananger to view and judge and hopefully if they have time they will kindly do a crtique video ,I am currently working on mine and scoring. And then i have to get the wife to judge. Hoping i will have the results by the weekend, but will keep you updated.
Once again many many many thanks for taking part, i was just trying to keep the seasons flowing, hope we get some more stepping up to the plate to run future weeks, its been a blast and a bit stressful as i am a man of low confidence sounds like a song title lol hence i feel bad judging others , anyway will give it my best shot, lotsa ukuele love to you all and i love the seasons home boys and home girls viva le revolutione !!!!!!!!!!!
oh i forgot final playlist :http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9D8D8AE7672FC1C0&feature=mh_lolz

Hey but what if we re-institute giving critique of the critique.
Who is going to be man enough to go up against JESUS?

The only thing that perhaps could be addressed is the length
of the tunic... the Gillette triple blade trim of the beard, and
the Vidal Sassoon coiffure, and the ever so slight Australian accent.
Big plus points for giving the peace sign and blowing kisses though.

Thanks all glad you liked the vid, but remember your the stars :) just a little update, I have done my scoring, my wife (jen) should hopefully have hers done tomorrow wed at the latest. Unfortunately Tle Folk are going to need a week, they are hoping to be able to do a critique video as well. Things are really happening for them at the moment they are really busy, but they are squeezing it in to do the judging, so hope your all ok with this. Will keep you updated as i get the results in any earlier. Once i get the wife's in i may put up our combined scores just to show how things are panning out.
Once again many thanks for your kind words, you all have done a super job this last week, it was fantastic to see the usual faces, brilliant to see some new faces and a treat to see the return of some returning faces :)
so good luck all and see you over in week 13, i gotta find a song now :)

Thanks guys it is quite hard to run, especially as i dont feel qualified to judge those who are far superior than myslef at playing the uke, and i missed not taking part. But yeah it has been fun to do and more importantly to keep the seasons rolling on for as long as we can :)

Thanks, UkuleleDavey, great idea for the 12th season. I've been wanting to do "twisted" for a while, and this was just the motivation I needed, thanks. And wee-ginga, I came this close (showing small gap between index finger and thumb) to doing "The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde", although it's probably more appropriate for an "outlaw" themed contest.

well I have 2 rounds of scoring in, I am still awaiting the results from "The Folk" and possibly a critique vid.
Anyway just thought you might like to see the top 3 so far and remember this is not the final result so anything could happen. And also I scored you all highly as i thought you were all great, the wife has been much more critical (so please blame her if your not happy )I basically left her to it so i had no sway or influence on her vote. So please dont be dis hearted if your low at the moment, there is still scores to come which could push you up.Hoping to have these scores monday at the latest.will keep you informed of any developments.

I dont expect England to do very well, they never do and they arent a very good side, the trouble is the media builds them up so high before any tournament and joe public believes the hype, then they come crashing down to realality when england crash out, what amazes me is how everytime the public get swept up and forget how pooh we are :) we invented so many sports and now are pretty rubbish at them lol
