View Full Version : 14th Season Of Uke: "Get On The Bike With Ike"

CHALLENGE:

record a song performed and/or recorded by Cliff "Ukulele Ike" Edwards. If you think jazz era, vaudeville and showtunes you're in the ball park. Most of his great recordings were made between 1920and the mid 1940's. Edwards was a legendary performer, gifted with a jaw dropping and chameleon like voice, coupled with a ukulele virtuosity refined over years of live playing. He was also recruited by Disney for several films, 'Pinnochio' notable among them and became the enduring voice of Jiminy Cricket. The list of quality songs in the Ike canon is mindblowing...

PERAMETERS:

* one take, no overdubs
* ukulele front and centre
* state in your clip that the recording is for the "14th season of uke: Get on the Bike with Ike"
* multiple versions of the same song are OK (I have an idea for a future seasons comp where we all have to do the same song)

JUDGING CRITERIA:

* we have 5 judges for this comp, all crazy Cliff Edwards fans: myself, eugenie, drbekken, TCK and Camsuke...
hopefully this will afford us a fair result.

points awarded in the following criteria:

* Playing /15
* Singing /15
* Overall performance: your ability to sell the song (camera presence; personality; creative flair; x-factor etc...) /10
* Set and Costume /10

for a total score out of a possible 50 points from each judge. We will collate our scores for final results.
I hope to do a critique video as well.

* 3 BONUS POINTS IF YOUR CLIP FEATURES A BIKE!!!

RESOURCES:

I understand this is perhaps a tough challenge, but I guess the 'seasons' has always been about growing, stretching ourselves as players and performers, so this week is no exception.

Here are some links which may or may not assist:

* http://www.redhotjazz.com/cliffedwards.html
* http://www.musicvf.com/Cliff+Edwards.art
* the sites Alligator Boogaloo; doctoruke; scorpex may have some chord charts though I'm not certain....try googling them
* http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB612DCBDF0435B86&feature=plcp
* in addition, if there is a particular song you'd like to play but can't find chords etc let me know and me or doc may be able to help

PRIZES:

1st place: http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/album.php?albumid=1632
My handpainted mahalo ukulele. It's very rough but has a bit of rustic charm about it I guess. Strung with worth clears and sounds pretty OK. OR you can have a 1950's Harmony soprano uke if you'd rather. It's in excellent condition. Your choice!
2nd: Cliff Edwards compilation album "Singin In The Rain"
3rd: book/cd Ian Whitcomb: "The Cat's Meow"

PARTING SHOTS:

* closing date is Sunday week May 27 @ 11.59pm Hawaiian Time.
* Thanks folks, hope you have fun with this weeks theme. Cliff Edwards is a great hero of mine right up there next to Pete Seeger and this is a great opportunity to give some love up for a gloriously charismatic and uber-skilled musician and entertainer. Hope you jump on your bikes and come along for the ride. Any questions PM me or put them up in the thread itself. Happy Ikeing all, blessings :)

Don't go on strike
Or take a hike
Or even catch a pike,

Just grab a mic
And hop on your trike
With Ike.

Pity the bike theme was droped.

Here is a bike ride I took earlier. It involves a slipped gorrilla pod shot of
my crotch, a pregnant woman, a race with a bus, a near disaster with a dug
up pavement, bongos, tabla, a L. Cohen song, and the glorious Finnish summer.

Hmmm...something just occured to me. "Bike" is short for "bicycle" - wouldn't that make "uke" short for "unicycle?" If so I think that anybody who enters this contest playing a Ukulele Ike song on a uke while riding a unicycle should definitely get bonus points because that would be "playing Ike on a uke on a uke" - so the score should be squared or something...

I'm dusting off my turntable! I have three vintage Ukulele Ike records - 45 songs altogether. If anyone has a song and would like to hear it done by Ukulele Ike himself (and can't find it on YouTube) PM me and if I have it I'll send it to you. I also have chords for 32 songs from a Ukulele Ike uke book-if your song is in there I can send chords.
And to get you all in the mood for Season 14:

This was a song that my father used to sing. I did not know where he picked it up from.
It was just a song from his past. I was surprised to find it had been done by Cliff Edwards.
He did it as an uptempo song, but given the economic crisis in Greece and Spain,
and the doom and gloom surrounding the Euro I thought it better to do it slow.

Naw I like to sing things slow anyways.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq5EyI01i9cGreat song Wee_ginga :) that reverb gives your uke the slight sound of the old honky tonk pianos,if i have the right name, you know the ones in the saloons of the old b&w western films, sounds good though, didnt Flannagan and allen sing that song as well. :)

Yeah I have cooked up some settings on Garbage-band that I call "old time scratchy hiss"
that gives the Uke a beat up barroom piano sound. I have employed it to a lesser degree on
a few other Cliff Edwards songs I have recorded before. Those old records had lots of scratch and hiss
on them, and that is what I am trying to aim at... make a modern day recording sound like it was old.
The video would also need to have a more distressed look as well.

Regarding the song somebody commented on th YT side that it quite often featured on the radio
on a programme called "Sing something simple" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sing_Something_Simple)

I always loved this song and was the one I was going to do. I was listening to another version which has a few more verses, so I may do it anyway , and use the other verses since I've been practicing it. if you don't mind. I promise it won't be as good as yours.

That's the great thing about these old standards. They're open to many interpretations. And one isn't necessarily better or worse than another, it's just different. For example, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis added a few verses to the original when they performed this song. That might be where your extra verses came from. But it's another interpretation, which is cool.
My wife and I have plans for the holiday weekend so I don't know if I'll have an entry this week, but I've been wanting to do a duet with my wife whenever the occasion seemed right. So if I do manage to get an entry done this week it'll probably be a duet of "Side by Side."

and I hope you do it better than mine.
We should encourage each other to do out best.

A duet would be lovely. It was great when Jon did a duet with his
wife. So go for it. I suppose the song is better as a duet where you
have the lines about sharing the load. Community, friendship and support is the name of the game.

Many thanks for your kind words Jon :) this is my 1st recording i actually feel embarrassed when i listen to it lol. My fretting of the chords was quite bad, funny how i have got so used to playing soprano now and the bari, yet my tenor threw me . I actually recorded another song today was fairly happy with it and then i accidently wiped it. Definately lost my slight mojo. A bruko #6 is in the pipeline.
Anyway thanks so much for your support, but i know this is my worst entry so far oh well its all a learning curve, and i think my entry will take some beating to be the worst fingers crossed i can pull another one off :)

Most people aspire to get rid of the hiss and crackle that tends to mar their recording,
but I have developed my own old time scratchy/hiss filter that degrades and distresses
the output that if you close your eyes you might think you were listening to a badly
damaged 78 from the 1920's:old:

Much cool stuff...keep 'em coming...Being a 'judge', I won't enter, and besides, I cut my right middle finger on May 17, while unloading gear for a band gig... The finger works on the piano, but for strumming a uke, it'll take a few more days to get back together...Can't wait to sit down and go through all the videos thoroughly, though!!!

Mine is like a surveillance cam shot of someone playing a song for the first time, but this was take 10 or so...thanks for the motivation and sorry I don't have more time to devote to ...ahem...learning to play the song.

I created a hodge podge version based on the info here: http://www.jazzage1920s.com/cliffedwards/recordings/paddlinmadelinhome.php

Hi All Great stuff so far, and a challenging week indeed. The Ike version of the song I chose is pure ukulele voodoo.

Peewee, great stuff! I'm just getting a chance to check out some vids from this week. I love the theme, challenging as it is. This does not look like an easy song and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Jeepers, what I wouldn't give to play a tune on my Grandad's uke! Lucky man.

Great Job Dave! This was going to be the one I was going to give it a shot with IF I could find the time. I'm glad I didn't though, I really enjoyed your version. I loved the picking and the pick up of the tempo towards the end. Really nice job my man.

Argh, my video didn't upload with sound. Grrr... I'll try again. Thanks Jon and Dave for the heads up!!

Still, check out Edwards' amazing version of "If I Had You" here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sF7x_VLXy78), and a terrific modern take by Nellie McKay here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hU446HDtGv8), she plays it right after her original (and also terrific) uke tune, "Mother of Pearl".

ARGH! Why did I say this judge this one?
You fine folks are an inspiration...such a great bit of Ike happening here.
I gotta jump in- this tune is on page 30 of Ukulele Ike's Songbook, Copy write 1949.
Me and Melissa took 3 turns at it (meaning we played it 3 times total...kinda how we roll).
I learned it from Eugene Ukulele.

another great contest so far! lots of wonderful entries! cheers!

Well you really got you Vo Oh Doe Dee Oh Doe on there at the beginning
and the wickity wackity woo interlude was nice...

To get ahead you need a hat.

If you want to play the Uke
You've got to have a certain look
You don't even need a FLUKE
To get ahead you need a hat

Some say get the proper strings
or Koa wood or other things
It's all roundabouts and swings
To get ahead you need a hat

To play real well get a cap
Or a helmet with a chin strap
Without headgear you'll look a sap
To get ahead you need a hat

To play like Zoe wear a bow
A big bee-hive will steal the show
Aldrene always wears a Chapaeux
To get ahead you need a hat

Longish hair does the trick
an bald is good if it looks slick
A mean beanie makes a marverick
To get ahead you need a hat

So this is my advice to you
Wear a CHE beret of midnight blue
and pull your baseball cap askew
To get ahead you need a hat.

After convincing myself that I didn't have time to do a song this week then realizing three songs I might actually be able to play had already been performed, the stars (or clouds rather) aligned perfectly and I thought "how could I not break in the sunshine and smiles uke with this little ditty"? My big, fat fingers are still getting used to the tiny soprano (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!). Thanks Jon for giving me this opportunity to explore this rich collection of music. I found a number of wonderful Cliff Edwards tunes I've never heard before but didn't have the time this week to figure out (Chiquita in particular I'd love to learn).

Speaking of duets, my wife is out of town for work and will get back just in time for us to leave for the holiday weekend. So I doubt we'll get that duet together this week. But I'll keep my eyes peeled for future opportunities.

In the meantime, I wanted to get something in this week. Fathers' Day, our anniversary and my birthday all fall within a month of each other, and I was wanting to move up from my $90 "starter" uke. So my wife let me pick out my own combined present for all 3 events, and I just got it Tuesday. It's a Kala KA-SMHT solid mahogany tenor with Worth Browns (Low G, of course.) I couldn't think of a more auspicious debut for it than Ukulele Ike week.

But I was a bit surprised no one had done this song yet. That's probably cuz it's *shudder* Disney!:eek::eek:

But somebody had to do it.

And a tip of the hat to you for your hat poem!

And a tip of the hat to you for your hat poem!

The hat poem was from way back in the day when there was something on UU called
"bring the song" challenge, which was to write a new song every month for a year.
That was one of the first songs that I wrote. I only had only been playing the Uke for a few
months and it was all a bit rough.

It is fun to look at it now and see all the faces that were visible on YT then and who played
the Ukulele and wore hats... many of them seem to have disappeared from the scene, but
many of the faces you will still recognise. I was pleased to get the words Chapeaux and askew worked into the song.

For what it is worth here it is... bad recording and all... I wonder how many faces people will recognise.

Here's my entry. Paper Moon. I fell in love with Ike's version of this song, so here's my homage to it.

It's the first time I've ever recorded outside, sorry the volume is so low. Listening with headphones definitely helps... I hope the bike offsets whatever points might be lost for poor sound. I knew I should have hired a boom operator!

Anyway, here goes.

OK, Jon and esteemed judges... here's my entry. Too many takes to get to this point, but I finally got through it once without being interrupted by requests for juice or the sound of dishes being dropped. There's nary a bike in sight. There was a tiny toy bike on the shelf next to me in earlier takes, but it disappeared halfway through. OK, just shut up and play, man! :D

Wow! some great entries there! and thanks for the kind words, everyone is sounding great as usual... I thought this challenge was so hard for me and my entry sucks but the rest of you are whippin' out these complicated tunes like it was nothin!
I would love to get a chance to redo mine but it's such a nice sunny day here in CA that I am gonna go outside and, of all things, try to teach my daughter how to... RIDE A BIKE! should be fun, huh? I just have to keep my boy from shooting her down with his squirt gun and water balloon grenades, lol

Well, I was too busy to join in the fun last week, so sorry to have missed out... I even practiced a few songs in my spare time but never had a chance to make the vid, Zappa's "Yo Mama" and some rap song about a mama on crack or something ;)
Anyway, thanks for this week's challenge, I discovered a song on Cliff's list (thanks to the provided link) and found Billie Holiday singing it on youtube and I just absolutely fell in love with it... I've been experimenting with it and playing it all week long, coming up with my own rendition, so here is the best take I could get last night, probably the only chance I will get to sit down and record it

WOW, fancy finger work. I loved it! I only wish I could play like that. That was inspiring. By the way, how old is your daughter? I took my five year old out yesterday to try and teach her how to ride a bike. I hate to say it, but she's as good at riding a bike as I am at the uke, we both need a lot of practice. Let me know how it goes!

As to not muddy up the thread...I got through all of them (I know- I said I was going to last night), and now I am going to take a chance to compliment ALL the amazing Ukulele players that have decided to spread a little Ike around the internet.
Seriously- everybody is getting a shout here.
Doug- Lady Be Good. HILARIOUS intro, beautifully played and well, I love the shoulders. I think that is "selling it".
Wee- Truly heartfelt, playing a tune your Da' did- lovely video all around.
Davey- two shots in a week! Paper moon and Red Red Robin. Loved them both, but you did a particularly nice job on Robin, and it suits your voice perfectly.
PeeWee- Paddlin' Madeline- what a tune! So great you get to play it on your grand dads Ukulele- very nicely done, complete with the intro scat- excellent.
Rolf- is that a plastic Ukulele? If it is, I am burning all mine-you made it sound completely unbelievable. So good.
Silly Dave- Again, bringing the scat parts- amazed at you guys when you do this- so hard...oh yeah, and that HAT!!!!
UkuleleDaddy- Great job just jumping in due to the opportunity of rain. Loved it
J-Peg- Bonus points for the historians. Kudos for telling us all a bit about the song, and then rocking it! Oh yeah...and mouth trumpet!!!!!!!
Myrna- My gosh Myrna, you have an absolutely lovely voice don't ya? And the 60 year old song book- very cool
Benjo-uke- Such great little fills there...piqued my interest as I can't learn those to save my life, and Mr. Eugene won't fly halfway around the world to teach me. Nicely done.
Strumsilly- is that a bike (lol)- Very well done, nice equipment as well. Another one among us who has some great pipes
Matty Dee- One of the criteria is selling it...so I flagged all the videos and got them in one spot to watch and my wife asked "what is selling it?". I simply hit play on your video and said "this". She said- Oh, OK...I get it :)
John- You are an Ukulele phenomenon. I think I have mentioned that before. Amazing playing and singing, in spite of the dogs and kids and parades. When I compare your videos from a year ago to now, and then do the same for mine, I seriously think I am missing something :)
Canoe lady- again with the selling it. I have written right here in my notes in big letters "Canoelady does not need to sell it." Lovely video and I dig the background singers so much ;)
Ukuloonie- very well done! I picked up on something in your voice while watching your video...ever heard of Pokey LaFarge? You got a quality there for sure.
OK- I think that is everyone. Such a great way to start Sunday. Now a tune, a cuppa, and the lake for me! Thank you all for entertaining me :)

:o thanks so much for your lovely words TCK, but i am most definately not the coolest person lol in fact i am probably the most un coolest person, so maybe my total uncoolness makes me cool, if that makes sense !!!!!
As you have figured out i am probably not one of the strongest entrants, only been playing for just over a year and a bit, picked the uke up in Jan2011 for the 1st time. And i dont enter this thread with any expectation of winning, i just love to take part, i love the comoradre and the banter and of course to see some great performances, technique and singing by the others, the prize for me is the friendship and the feedback i get on my playing and singing and the added bonus of discovering music, i had never opened my ears and mind to, im now addicted to Woody Guthrie thanks to Jon :), discovered i love playing the blues on the uke thanks to John (oldpharte) and really appreciating alot more genres of music thanks to all on here.
Great to have you judging TCK, and getting to know you through this thread.
I cant help but praise all my fellow seasonista's as i really do enjoy everything they put up and love the little community we have going. And i will say it again if or when i ever win millions on the lotto i promise i will sort out a mass gathering of the seasonista's
Long live the continuing seasons comp :)

My top five:
MattyDee
Doug
Canoelady
The Silly Dave
Jnobianchi

Though I loved them all- you all ought to see my notes...sigh, felt like grading finals over here for a week :)

If that song were a baseball, and that ukulele a baseball bat,
then you just hit that song right out of the stadium.
That was a home run. Take a lap of honour

hi John, I think we're all perhaps agreed that all your performance was lacking was a suit and a pushbike; had they been in the frame your score would have been 53. I've not given a perfect score ever, but this would have been it. Just great to have you on board brother, I am your biggest Tasmanian fanboy. :o

Everyone, just waiting on our final two judges, Eugenie and Cam. I have watched and re-watched this playlist several times now. Every clip was a treat to this ol' Ike nut. Final results will be in Friday...

Have to agree with Eugene here. John, if there was a suit (or funny hat for us lot...we love our funny hats) and a tricycle (mostly because I want to see you play on a tricycle)...the would be a perfect score. As far as playing and singing goes, that is about as good as it gets.
I showed my ma the video- her dad collected a lot of old tin pan and she grew up on it (and sang many of the tunes I am learning now on uke in refreshment houses when she became old enough to walk)...her mouth fell open and she said to me "Good god- this guy was born DECADES late". That is her brand of compliment, and she is an esteemed judge of music of all kinds for sure.
Also with Eugene in that I have watched all these over again after casting my scores- all of them will bring a smile for a LONG time. You all certainly set the bar for my personal playing- thanks for the inspiration :)

the 2nd half of the field was bunched in VERY close behind. Cheers and kudos to everybody. My fave week so far in the seasons comp. A wonderful playlist you all have created, I enjoyed every performance immensely. Made an ol' Ike fan's heart skip more than one beat I can tell you. But I guess there are winners so could you guys please PM me with your addresses so I can get your prizes out.

(Matty, you get to choose between 2 ukes, if you would like me to do a quick video for you let me know...may help your choice)

THANKYOU and blessings to all. Onwards we pedal into week 15, 16 and beyond... :)

Holy crow! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

So, so honored to win this one, especially in such esteemed company: Jnobianchi, that was an awe-inspiring performance (and I still want the chart for it if you have one)! Jpeg, what a great rendition of a classic tune. Doug, I love your jazzy style! Everyone, as Jon said, the competition this week was fierce.

Thank you so so much to Jon and Eugenie, Cam, TCK, and Doc Bekken. Jon, what a fantastic idea for a contest. I think it was you who pointed me to Ike's version of Paper Moon in some thread or other a couple of months ago, and I am incredibly glad you did, as it really opened me up to a whole new level of uke showmanship. I think the thing that I love most about Ike's performances, and that I hoped to at least minimally capture in my take, was his sense of ease while maintaining the utmost in virtuosity.

Anyway, I give a lot of credit to Christian for starting this whole mess, as the weekly format has really pushed me, and all of us, really, to get better.

I said this in the season 15 thread yesterday, but I really feel the overall quality of all the entries has risen by quite a few notches these last couple of weeks, and the bar has gotten so high, I'm simultaneously excited and terrified to see where we go next, which makes me literally thrilled, I suppose.

Forward, Seasonistas! To Sgt Pepper, UK folk songs, and beyond!

Oh, and Jon, I'd love a vid comparing the two ukes—not so much for decision-making as to give you the opportunity to do at least one more Ike song on each of them, and us the opportunity to hear them.

Yup, that's the key to showmanship. Matty, as a location scout, I think one of the things that pushed you over the edge was your choice of setting. And also and the bike, and the outfit, and of course the performance. Get a sound guy next time though!

The relentless nature of the seasons cycle is a butt kicker for sure! It's the ultimate procrastination machine!

Thanks so much for letting me play along here Jon, my eyes are opened to why I play the uke by tuning in here. The camaraderie here has hooked me...such beautiful people playing such wonderful tunes...truly the finest way to spend an afternoon.
Congrats to the winners, but you all win here in Cloverdale- the "Great One" is smiling today. He left us penniless and without anyone to put him to rest, it is nice to see his memory living among at least a small group of us who "get it". These videos will entertain me for a long time.
Cheers all, and please look forward to a season from The Cloverdale Kid...coming soon.

Well Done Matty, J-peg and doug. Brilliant Job.
Thanks so much Jon and all the judges, really appreciate all the work you have put in. And congrats to all fellow entrants for keeping on and coming back week after week to keep this baby growing and rolling and feeding this little mutating monster that Dr Chrimmes invented. I absolutley love hanging out with the big boys and girls (in terms of uke playing ability) you are all such wonderful encouraging supportive people and it is a sheer delight to hang out in this online world with you ALL.

TCK absolute delight to have the pleasure of getting to know you a little through this thread and look forward to seeing your seasons week ? and would love it if you hoped on board now if you have the time :)
Once again many thanks Jon and all LONG LIVE THE SEASONS !!!!

Congrats once again, Matty! I hope you'll understand that I intend it as a compliment when my hired goons show up to break your fingers, as I have determined that that's the only way I'm ever going to beat you in one of these things.
No, seriously, I would never do that. I enjoy hearing you play too much. It is truly an honor to be included in such esteemed company. Thanks again to all the judges.
And to all my fellow seasonists, I don't find the time to comment as much as I'd like in here, to tell you how I enjoy watching your videos and being constantly challenged to up my game. And I've never been good at all the mushy emotional stuff, so I don't have the words to say how much the camaraderie and personalities in this forum have come to mean to me. But I love this place, you guys and these contests.

And a side note to Jnobianchi: Dude! Where the **** did you come from?! First appearance in here and BAM! Knocked it right out of the park. Seriously dude, when I think about how I want to play ukulele someday when I get good enough, in my head it sounds just like what you did there. That totally and completely rocked. Please don't buy a fedora or else between you and Matty and eugeneukulele I'll never win one of these things. Oh, who am I kidding, buy a fedora, whup my ass (metaphorically speaking) and make me like it. Whatever you do, hat or no hat, just KEEP POSTING VIDEOS LIKE THAT. Cuz that was awesome!

Congrats, Mattydee, J-Peg and Dougf. Great paying and swell videos!

Matty - I'll send you the song sheet in PDF for "Charley" - It's a fun tune.

J-Peg - you are too kind. You have to watch it, though; that sort of comment will just encourage me. :D

thanks

stevenkaty has exactly 3 posts, all of which are tacked onto the end of contest threads and look similar to this one. So my guess is yes, it's crap.
