I teach uke at a Hula school, and I was trying to find a song for my little 7 year olds. I have a good crop this year - they practice and learn quick. They have been learning Spongebob and You are my Sunshine, but I would like to balance it out with some authenticity. Does anyone know any Hawaiian kids songs? Hopefully something simple and repetitive -

Thanks!

Not traditional Hawaiian songs, but here are a few tunes written by Roy Sakuma for his young ukulele students.

Oh, Auntie Nona Beamer's "Pupu Hinu Hinu" without a doubt. It's a song she wrote to help lull her young boys (Keola and Kapono) to bed when they were little.

Ironically, when we asked Auntie Nona, one of the icons of Hawaiian music and culture, what her favorite song was, this is what she started to sing (sorry it's side ways):

So I think it's valid to add Skinamarinky Dinky Doo to the list as well.

Auntie Nona also wrote "Kahuli Aku," another delightful song to teach children. The kahuli are tree snails that were once abundant throughout the Hawaiian islands but are now only found in the mountain forests. The song is actually about how the birds chirp in the evening, asking the birds to bring them a drink of water. Here's a delightful video of the song being performed by children:
