Hey, Folks!

Just wanted to say hello to everyone, and I'll miss y'all...

Well, for a little while.

I'm having ligament reconstruction surgery on my left elbow in about 10 hours, so I won't be around for a bit.

Well, I may be reading, but don't expect to post, due to the heavy-duty pain meds I'll be taking for a week or so...

The worst part is that my left arm will be in a rigid brace for a month, to force the bones/allograft to heal in the proper position, so no uke.

For a month.

After that, my sole exercise will be (trying to) straighten my left arm. I'm going to see if I can get permission to play then, seeing as the arm won't be straightened, but could be hyper-flexed.

And when I start Physical Therapy after two months, I'm going to try to get the therapist to build the uke into the PT program.

If all goes well, I can go back to work in 3-1/2 to 4 months.

So while I'm not here, please keep me in your thoughts, and try to play something irreverent on your videos. Tom Leher, Tom Paxton, John Prine, Steve Goodman, Weird Al, Smothers Brothers.. If you can laugh with it, it counts.

I'll type at y'all soon!

Wishing you steady recovery from a difficult operation. How about jokes? Would jokes help?

Did you know that one of Alexander the Great's men invented a prototype of the wristwatch?
He discovered a combination of natural chemicals that would change color over time in the sun. Troops could wear a cloth dipped in the mix tied to their arms and get an idea of how much time had passed in battle. They called it Alexander's Rag Timeband.

Yikes, that sounds like quite an ordeal. Hope you come thru the surgery and recovery with flying colors. :)

Some years ago I severed some tendons at the base of my LH pinky (trying to push a lid into a soup can for recycling ).

And when I start Physical Therapy after two months, I'm going to try to get the therapist to build the uke into the PT program.
After surgery to repair the tendons and a cast for a month or more, I started "occupational" therapy with a hand specialist.

"Physical" therapy is more concerned with motor movements, like being able to walk and having an acceptable range of motion for your affected body parts.

"Occupational" therapy is more focused on getting you able to do (specific) things again that you were able to do before the injury/surgery.

My therapist said I did incredibly well ("for someone your age"). She also said that musicians were always her best patients, because they were truly motivated to fully use their hands again to play.

Anyway, you could ask if occupational vs. physical therapy is available to you. Some are versed in both, so even asking might just get you assigned to occupational.

Best wishes to you thru this. :)

I think the ukulele playing will be considered occupational therapy. Best of luck, Chief.

Yikes- the time has come. Blessings from Cloverdale mate for a speedy recovery and bionic Uke skills...
and while irreverent and me are not often friends I will see what I can do ;)

all the best with the surgery brother Kurt and blessings for a speedy recovery mate. Take care of you, and the uke as part of your physio sounds perfect. :)

I hope all goes well. Here's to a speedy recovery...

Aloha Kurt,
I just heard from Mrs C...Good Luck and prayers sent, for your arm surgery and God's Speed in the recovery.....hope to see you back soon...YF, Stan

Aloha e Kurt.

Follow what the Doctors and Physical Therapists instruct you to do during your rehabilitation. You can have fun learning to finger your chords with your other arm and hand during this period. If your posts look a little "loopy" from the meds, we'll understand and inform others who do not know what's going on.

Prayers sent,

Ric

May God bless you. Get well soon!! Will be praying for you.

I just wanted to say good luck, we're all counting on you. <-- That's gonna look hilarious if you're a fan of funny movies mixed with pain meds. :D

Push to get better, but not too hard. Even when you can type put can't yet play, we'll all still be here. :)

Best wishes for a successful surgery and speedy and full recovery Kurt.

Good luck, Kurt. We will be thinking of you. Here's hoping that you will be better than ever after the surgery.

Need someone to play that Sceptre in the meantime so it doesn't suffer from neglect?

I'll miss your posts, Kurt! Best of luck with the surgery and recovery!

Well, I'm back already....

I was there, and prepped, ready to go, and the surgeon saw a small area that he is worried is infected, near the surgery site.

So the surgery was cancelled at the last minute.

We're looking at possibly 3 weeks from now for a new date, (which gets rid of a possible July visit to San Jose, CA....) IF he doesn't see signs of infection in his office next week.

[grumble, grumble, bitch bitch...]

Thank you to all the well-wishers; I guess it worked a little too well. (g)

Ah shucks! Well, at least we will get to see some posts for a few weeks. I always enjoy hearing from you.

Just remember, the ukulele's love is unconditional. When you go in, it will sit waiting for you. When you come out, it will be ready. If you stop, it won't care. And it will be easier to pick back up than just about any instrument. Take 2 months off from the trumpet, and the trumpet is jealous, and angry, and doesn't like you anymore. It will screech and cough, but not sing. Ignore your drum kit and it will laugh as you flail wildly, knocking bits over.

But a ukulele will sing along with every strum.
