View Full Version : 18th season of the Ukulele...

TCK
06-13-2012, 02:58 PM
Haha Steffen, this is an easy one- relatively straight forward even...I was going to have you all cover Motorhead, but thought better of it- here we go!
Seasons of the Ukulele Season 18
Starts- Sunday June 16th, Ends Sunday June 23rd.
CHALLENGE
Record any song as a duet. My favorite videos are the ones where we collaborate, or drag our mates into them, or our significant others, so I figure this a convenient way to ask for more. Song may be an original composition or a cover.
PARAMETERS
Video must be one take (it may be take 56)- no overdubs. It must also be a new video.
Both parties in your duet need not play the Ukulele, but both need to sing parts of the arrangement.
The Ukulele must be the central instrument in your arrangement
State at the beginning of your video that it is for Season 18 of the Ukulele
Post your videos in this thread
Duets may be male-female or single gender
Multiple versions of the same song are OK
You may enter as many times as you would like, but your final video is the one that is judged
JUDGING CRITERIA
Points will be awarded as follows:
Musicianship /15 (this is an overall score for both people if both play)
Singing /15 (applied to both singers)
Overall performance /10 (this is your ability to sell the song...charm and panache folks)
Set and Costume /10 (I hate doing this part, but like watching it)
This allows for fifty points from each judge. Scores will be collated and averaged for final score.

*** BONUS POINTS You had to know that was coming. Many singers leave us way too early, one of the finest IMHO was Miss Tammi Terrell. Together with Marvin Gaye she left quite a mark on the music world for a 24 year old. Do one of their songs and you get +3

Your esteemed panel of judges is as follows: Myself, Roxhum, Ksiegel, Canoelady and 23skidoo.

TCK we are excited for this one and are going to do a song but we have a question. Is a green screen allowed as a set or is that considered cheating? We didn't wanna get disqualified for the other contest so we just did it in the kitchen and moved some art work around but I have been tinkering with a green screen and I would like to try it if it's allowed.

I think because I included set as a judging criteria, that kind of throws the field off a bit as those skills are not something everyone can muster. Gonna have to say that greenscreen would at the very least forfeit those points (but I am stoked to see what you fella's come up with)

Question: could I do a song that was written for and performed originally as a duet but have two girls sing the female part? I'm thinking of having my daughters share the female part while I do the male (or perhaps the other way around might be interesting).

Duet? Sure! Bonus for Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye? Great idea, but quite a challenge to sing that, TCK!

Here's our entry!
"Something Stupid" had been taken into the charts by Frank and Nancy Sinatra in 1967, and then in the same year Marvin and Tammi delivered their version. In 2001 the song has been in the public ear via the version of Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman. But our fav always has been Tammi's and Marvin's version!
Hope you like ours!

The age/era doesn't matter - just that it is a duet.
You can even do an original song, if you'd like.

However, Dave is the final arbiter, and you have such a lovely voice...

Hmmm, I wonder if something like skype would work for a distance collab? If one person could capture the skype session... Just throwing out ideas here - I don't have skype and I'm on DSL so I suspect my upload speed (~256k) would be too low to support something like this anyway. Still, some of you folks with real internet connections might be able to pull it off...

Oh thank you all for the kind words :-) It was serendipity that we were able to enter a duet for this week - my dear friend Gladys was at the festival and we had a set onstage Sunday (after staying up all night on Saturday playing wild and wonderful music with fun and crazy musicians- so we are a little sleep deprived in this vid...). We've been singing together for many years but she lives hundreds of miles away from me so we only get together occasionally.

The background is my special idea, you can easily do this yourself (for a video take or even a small gig): Just take a rescue blanket/ warming foil from the first aid kit and fix it on the wall! Looks like bars of gold (or silver) and is available in every drugstore! :old:

Many Many thanks benjoeuke :) it was tough to get through it lol we kept stuffing up at one point continuously, then my nail went and finally on the best take the battery ran out lol.
I have heard about super glue, i may have to try it, i have just tried some special nail glue/hardener but it is not very smooth and catches on the strings, gives me a bit of a reggae strum lol
Thanks so much for your great feedback :)

@daveey - "Nailaid iron hardener" is a clear nail polish that works pretty well to keep nails from splitting. If it's already splitting you can sometimes repair with a bit of super glue (very sparingly - apply with one of those applicators that has the teeny-tiny hole). You might need to get somebody to help you so you can hold the bits together while putting on just a drop of glue. Then, after the glue dries use the clear nail polish to protect it.

Daveey, that was festive indeed! Nice One.

As for your nail, I have repaired with superglue (from the nail care aisle at the druggist - that's what you POMs call them innit?) a dab in the rip then a patch made of (cue the jokes) teabag paper, which, as an Englishman you must have plenty of. Put a piece over the rip and wet it with the glue, do the same underneath, file it all down when it's hardened.

Lasted for a month or so on my thumb to get a nasty rip to grow out. had to repair a couple of times.. just now getting back to normal.

Don't think I'll be entering this week, my family is out of town and too busy to recruit a friend I think..we'll see.

cheers, peewee

Nicely done boys... take it to the streets... you could make a few bob with those songs.

On a side note there is one line in 5ft 2 that stops me dead in my tracks when I try to sing that
song... it is the line about "all covered in fur"... for some unknown reason the image of a large
hirsute women springs to mind... and once that image has been implanted I can never get past

many many thanks peewee, John, the ukelites and wee_ginga :) we do seem to play well together, we are trying to summon up the courage to do a spot at a local acoustic open mic night. I think it also helps that we love these songs

Gee, folks... I'm going to a music festival this weekend, and won't even be able to look at anything until Sunday night/Monday morning. (I'll even get to go to a Ukulele Workshop Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer are giving!)

So open wide those floodgates, and let the tunes flow!

crazy week Dave (very unusual for us country bumpkins), I've been away, Fiona is busy every day... but I'm trying to teach her a song and hopefully Sunday afternoon we'll do it..may have to read lyrics from a page though to meet the deadline which is something I swore I'd never do on camera...aaarrrrgghhhh. It's gonna be a last minute thing for us...sorry the thread has stagnated but the drying creek bed will become a mighty river come Sunday and we'll have heaps to yarn about while the judging is done... :old:

Yeah- I didn't consider inhibition and scheduling (I rarely do) as I will throw it all to the wind and just start playing with any old person :) I did a Temptations sing along with a homeless fellow a while back- we brought the on lookers to their knees (mostly horror and shock).
The way I look at playing music is to share, get others to participate, use force as necessary-
I was inspired by this a long time ago

Hopefully some others will grab onto it and make some smiles before tomorrow

Could not find a partner for this week, but I did do a duet with my grand-daughter recently. So since it is the England game tonight against Italy, and if England win, then it is a semi-final tussle with Germany... which means entering a world of pain for a certain Mr C.
So in honour of tonight's game, and in anticipation of WWIII here is the song :-)

Since this song has not been done specifically for the contest I don't want it to be considered... I'm just here to make up the numbers

It is an ever so slight wind-up which I hope Mr C. appreciates. I thought he got off so lightly with his three lions parody

Whew! Got it done.

Many years ago, Donna and I saw the Australian band Crowded House on MTV's Unplugged. They closed the show with a song they said was written by their bass player's brother. We immediately fell in love with the song. Fortunately, I had taped the show, so we rewatched it and learned the song and I figured out the guitar chords (all three of them.) The song quickly became a staple of our repertoire and my personal favorite that we sing together. I kept watching for it to turn up on a Crowded House album, but we didn't even know the name of the song. We used to jokingly refer to it as "that song we know," (as in "you want to play that song we know?") In a way it was kinda cool. Like a hidden treasure nobody knew about but us.
Eventually, they invented this great big thing called the internet. You may have heard of it. It's really good at finding out stuff you didn't know. So I did some googling and found out that the bass player's brother is the singer and guitarist for Hunters & Collectors and that they recorded the song. Even though neither the band nor the song got much traction here in the states, Wikipedia tells me it's one of the most popular songs ever in Australia. So maybe not such a hidden treasure.
But it's still my favorite.

Duet?

I've enjoyed the music this week everyone. I really wanted to enter this week TCK. Just couldn't get it together with the kids amongst all the stuff going on. We were going to do a rendition of Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious. For me, playing music is most enjoyable when it's done with friends. In fact, I was going to host a similar season myself. I applaud your theme and, though I didn't enter, thankfully the seasons keep on rollin'. BTW, since you live not far from my dad, we should get together during one of my visits and play some music!

Fun one, y'all. Your voices and personalities click well, Dave and Seante. Your uke playing makes the verses sound somewhat sad (in a groovy way) then you pep up the rhythm and your harmonies fill the choruses with hope and fun---a great contrast. Oh, yes indeed.

Again folks, season playlist is
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDEEC68CC7E4893E8&feature=plcp. As this wraps up (you still have four hours), I gotta say thanks to all the folks who have entered and played their hearts out. Totally selfish motives- I wanted to see other folks uking for the same reasons I do, and I got some real doozies here.
Today as we wrap this week, I celebrate my 12th Anniversary to my favorite Ukulele pal, my musical muse, and she who puts up with all my crap, and I gotta say it has been a delight to watch you all play with your fondest mates, your bestest friends, your often silent spouses (who are AWESOME) and your siblings. For me, the uke is always about together, and this has been a great ride through that terrain for sure. Bless you all for the continued inspiration, and I will see you all at the river.
Going to be about a week before I announce (like I said- 4 HOURS LEFT) because some of my judges are out of town and not available to get scores in yet- we will get them all and get you your prizes, albeit a little more slowly than you may be used to.
OK- let's see who else gets one in under the gun :)

Awe bless you mate...nothing better than uking with our loved ones for sure. Music was sent here to heal us all, and that means collectively. I am saddened I will miss out on the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious- be sure to post it at some point because I am a sucker for kids (I am a teacher) and would love to see it. I PM'd you all the information on how to find me when you are next in the redwoods...I figure the two of us will give the Bohemians a run for their money (a friend of mine is constantly begging me to go to one of their outings, it would be great to show up ukes blazing)- anyway, holler when you are in town, I will play with you any day

Many amazing entries. Sadly, not one person wore a large, feathery plume in their hat - the very definition of panache!

All of my scores were close - most of the videos were within 3 points of each other.

I do have to point out that if I can't understand the lyrics, or can't figure out the name of what is being sung, I tend to deduct a point from the singing or overall score (but not from both.)

Just for future reference.

Thank you all for your entries, and thank you Dave for asking me to be a judge. It was fun!

She is darling and brought to me a delightful belly laugh. Lucky for the others she isn't in the competition because she'd get my vote for sure.

Thanks for introducing us Americans to that song. I liked it too. The two of you harmonize very well together.

Hey folks - the late arriving judge here..... sorry if I've held things up! Just spent a week with the kids, canoeing and floating on a beautiful river and hanging out at a really great bluegrass festival! The only thing lacking was a reliable internet connection.....

Thanks for your patience and all the great entries - I've had a really pleasant couple of hours watching the videos, although y'all have presented me with some really tough decisions.

Ukelites - smooth and polished, as always, and a great set. Nice song choice, as well....

Myrna & Gladys - great tunes and well played - 'Tennessee Waltz' is one of my staple numbers..... beautiful harmonies, nice pickin, and kudos for the live setting. You got a bonus point for the bear skin......

Dave & Simon - solid playing and vocals - nicely arranged medley and a good selection of tunes.... loved the shirts also.....everytime I see you guys play, I just want to pull up a chair and strum along....

ukuloonie - beautiful setting and one of my favorite songs..... nice pickin on the banjo and some lovely harmonies - good stuff....

doublegs - liked this one a lot - great tune and really sweet vocals - some nice finger picking and a well put together presentation - looking forward to seeing more from you ladies...

J-peg - GREAT song and I'm a sucker for mandolin.... this was one of the stand out performances for me - relaxed, comfortable, and the two of you look like you were made to be sitting on that couch playing together.

Ralf - I think this was my favorite of the bunch. A wonderful tune and well performed.... just nothin wrong with that at all - great fun.....

mattydee - another comfortable, inviting performance..... liked the percussion and the vocal interplay - you two were obviously enjoying yourselves and really communicated something with your perfromance.

Luana Gouvea - very sweetly done - a great song..... enjoyed the banjolele especially and nice duet vocals....

SillyDave- very solid performance.... great strum and the vocals - from both of you - were especially nice - those harmonies are tough but they worked out really well.....

uytaelee - another of the stand out performances. Excellent playing and vocals - truly a pleasure to watch.....

DAPuke - great job, Don & Sissy - I dig me some Patsy Cline..... nice solid strum and the vocals were top notch - both the lead and the harmony..... a great vocal duet....

Thanks to TCK for inviting me to judge - I kind of feel like an interloper.... I made videos for the first couple of Seasons, but haven't had the time to sit down and do one since - this has definitely inspired me to try and get involved in some of the future Seasons instead of just watching all the great entries each week....

Great job everyone and thanks!
