A cheerful little ditty about a man murdering his girlfriend then running away to sea.

His ghost gets it's cum-uppance though. :rulez:

Seriously a traditional ballad with numerous versions in both the British Isles and North America.

I used the shruti box drone accompaniment again.

Nice one Tootler. I'd never heard that one before, but it reminds me of "Young Emma" - which covers some of the same territory.

Young Emma (Trad. Arr. Berni Armstrong)

Young Emma was a fine young maid,
Oh, she loved her sailor bold.
Who ploughed the main much gold for to gain (x2)
As he sailed the lowlands low.

Her father owned a public house,
Alongside of the quay.
And he warned her against sailors (x2)
Who sailed the lowlands low.

But she warmed a bed for her young love.
Saying: “Enter quiet in….
Know my father he hates sailors, (x2)
Who sail the lowlands low.”

When they were both a sleeping,
Her father in did creep,
And he stabbed that poor young sailor (x2)
Who sailed the lowlands low.

Then he dragged the body out of bed,
And to the beach did go.
And he sent his corpse a sinking (x2)
All in the lowlands low.

Young Emma she lay dreaming,
She dreamed a fearful dream.
She dreamed her love lay bleeding (x2)
All in the lowlands low.

“Oh father where’s my sailor bold,
Came here to lodge last night?”
“He’s fled, he’s gone, no tales to tell (x2)
To sail the lowlands low.”

No proof had she of murder,
No one believed her tale,
Her child would know no father (x2)
To sail the lowlands low.

Then she went ranting crazy,
To Bedlam forced to go,
Because she loved him dearly,
Who sailed the lowlands low.

Thanks.

Young Emma is certainly in the same territory. :agree:

When I sang it the other night someone mentioned High Germany but that concerns sweethearts away at war not murder. Young Emma is definitely a murder ballad. I've not heard it before but I'm sure I've heard something with a similar theme of disapproving parents trying to get rid of "unsuitable" lover. Usually end up with both the boy and the girl dead. All cheerful stuff, but great songs. :D
