Anyone know about Hawaiian??

Hello everyone,

I'm really interested in learning more about the Hawaiian style of playing the ukulele. I know the general turnarounds, but what else do you all play? I'd love to learn some riffs or if you could point me into the direction of old Hawaiian songs, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Many of those are dead links. But, Aaron's (the bald guy) are exceptional. Sorry, I didn't realize how many were irrelevant.

If you click on Hawiian Music Supply on it, you can see they have almost 500 vimeo videos...most are uke demos, but if you scroll through., you'll see lessons here and there. And they're all great@!

There's a compilation of Hawaiian songs, called He Mele Aloha. Unfortunately, the notation is lyrics with chords, so the songs are hard to play if you don't already know the melodies. Fortunately, some enterprising person matched many of the songs with a youtube video and provided an index of them here.

Thanks for the link! My wife bought me this book and like you said it's hard to play if you don't already know the melodies. If they had provided the music notation or even a CD it would have made it much easier to learn.
 
I would also suggest listening to a wide variety of Hawaiian music. Assuming you have an itoy of some type you might want to download the free app from radio station KPOA on the Big Island. It's a real "local" station with a great variety of music, from old school to contemporary.
As has been mentioned, www.liveuke.com is also a good resource, run by a guy who not only lives here but lives Hawaiian music.
