Errr, no, this is gonna be - like German philospher Imanuel Kant would say - much more "metaphysical" ... hehehehe....

Wonderful... I do think that a spot of philosophy would bring both intellectual and cultural
depth to the seasons of the ukulele. Who knows someone might even do that monumental
song "the Philosophers song" the lyrics of which always gives me pause for thought regarding
the meaning of life.

Can't play this video in the U.S., but I know it pretty well by heart. There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach ya 'bout the raising of the wrist, Socrates himself was permanently pissed.

Now that both England and German are out of the Euros, both suffering at the feet of Pirlo,
let us give the final word to the Italian propagandist and revolutionary, Giuseppe Mazzini

“Music is the harmonious voice of creation; an echo of the invisible world.”

And move on to the music and away from the football.

Very clever idea!
Do you want to expand the words required to include others that relate to heaven/hell?
Words like divine, celestial, Pearly Gates, St. Peter
Any name for the devil: Beelzebub, Lucifer, Satan

Then you could accept anyone who submits "Bohemian Rhapsody" (ha ha) or this one:
"Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate that he'll just have to wait---I've just got to have another cigarette."

Is there a folk song about the devil going down a river with an animal...? :)

We thought about the "top" league, so synonyms for "the devil" or "angels" are ok, but not every average saint or sinner. We guess there are still enough songs left...

A folk song about the devil going down a river with an animal?
We would give some bonus points, especially if it's a 12bar blues written by yourself! ;)

And now for something completely different.

How about an opening shot? This one has them all.

A traditional English song; Dives and Lazarus. The story is based on a parable in St. Luke's gospel.

In case anyone asks "Isn't that the tune to The Star of County Down?" the answer is yes but this song is older and there are several folk songs that have used this tune.

I had 15 minutes to record today, so why not? This is the Talking Heads song "Heaven". Which still leaves "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel" and "Swamp" ("the devil, he has a plan...") for someone else. Two beats vanished mysteriously from the intro. I suspect foul play.

Uke4ia, that's definitely a cool heaven song! We haven't heard that one for a long time! Your voice fits very well for David Byrne songs! Thanks for your entry!

Very nice. I know this song from a rock version June Tabor and the Oyster Band did in the late '80s. It ended with a verse that had Dives saying something like "Hell is dark/Hell is deep/Hell is full of mice/It's a pity that any poor sinful soul should embark on a second life".

Excellent theme, Ukelites, should garner some wonderful selections......and great entries so far from Geoff, Dave, Jim, & the Daddy..... - Jim, that Talking Heads tune was one of the first songs that popped into my head when I saw the theme this week - nice job on it.....

After judging week 18, I was inspired to throw my hat in the ring.....worked up a great arrangement of Ernest Tubb's 'Driftwood On The River' for Myrna's week, but had a hectic several days and wasn't able to get it recorded by the deadline..... got a few in mind for this one, though - at least one of them will get done.....

I won't ask how you came to be familiar with that song.

Ya know, I like a well crafted pop song as much as anybody. And sometimes you hear some overly produced autotuned piece of crap and think that's all it is, but then you look at the words and the melody without all the slick production and find a nice little song under there that, presented simply and properly, really shines.

This is not one of those times.

I entered doing my own version of Redemption Song. I swear to you, not 30 minutes later another completely awesome version that sounded nothing like mine was uploaded. I was a bit jealous, but it's the whole idea. Different versions make it fun. So, even if someone does your song, do it any ways. Perhaps my favorite group of all time.
But there's a reason you rarely see covers of their songs. Because no one can figure out what she's saying. In fact, if you listen to a couple Cocteau Twins album and then put on an early REM album like Murmur, it suddenly becomes much easier to make out REM's lyrics. But there's a reason you rarely see covers of their songs. Because no one can figure out what she's saying. In fact, if you listen to a couple Cocteau Twins album and then put on an early REM album like Murmur, it suddenly becomes much easier to make out REM's lyrics. Someday, I'm bound to do a cover of Pearly Dewdrops-Drops just for giggles.

We played a game in high school: drive around with a Cocteau Twins album in the tape deck and take turns yelling out our interpretation of the lyrics between each line of the vocals..... there wasn't really a winner, but the cool kids were the ones who came up with the most plausibly ridiculous interpretation.....

One of the biggest hits in Finland was "Get on" by the Hurriganes.
The lyrics are in English however they make no sense... which I think is OK
for any genuine rock and roll song.

It's so overproduced, I had to stop it part way through. I really couldn't get behind the production to get at the song. Maybe it's a case of gritting your teeth and trying to write down the words. Once you've done that you can judge the song.

I dare someone to do a uke cover of this. There's so much autotune used to correct this guy's voice. Who do they think they're fooling?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YuO6np8Ma8

I've been taking a closer look at this song (yeah, I know, shut up) and musically it's not really that bad. It's your basic four chord pop song. Not THE four chord pop progression, which is I-V-iv-IV. This is the same thing except starting on the vi, so it's vi-IV-I-V, although technically it's i-VI-III-VII, but you know what I mean. It's the kind of chord progression and melody that you should be able to work with. The lyrics OTOH pretty much suck, but musically it's not extraordinarily bad.

What I'm getting at is that I keep coming back to this song and thinking I might actually try it. So thank you for that, Alan. Thank you straight to hell.

As an aside to the judges, do we get extra points for the degree of difficulty? Like for making a crappy pop song sound presentable. :)

There are 15 points for playing (mastering a difficult song sometimes may be more impressive than an easy one...) and 10 points for how you sell the song (so if you make a crappy song a good one, you earn some points here...)!
15 points for singing and 10 for setting/costume. Total 50 points!

In case anyone asks "Isn't that the tune to The Star of County Down?" the answer is yes but this song is older and there are several folk songs that have used this tune.

Here's some brimstone for you. In the spirit of the Meat Puppets, it's lo-fi in every way, and includes a Curt Kirkwood vocal tribute as well. Hard to believe this song has been kicking around for nearly 30 years.

Just did a review of the entries so far. Wow.

@tootler: you are the bearded bard. You sing that song like you own it. can't imagine anyone else pulling it off as well

@ sillydave: classy. Just Classy.

@ uke4ia: I'm glad you did that song, because now I don't have to learn it! I love the Talking Heads. I'm impressed by how you sneak in little melodic picking bits between your sledgehammer strums. And those David B lyrics suit you well.

@ daddy: I have a hard time with Ray LaMontagne and his serious tone. You have shown me that there is value to that song. thanks

@ nongdam: what a sweet song and what a sweet sincere rendition. Very nice

@ strumsilly: Nice relaxed rendition, relaxed is hard to pull off, especially on camera. Your voice sounds great.

@ Lindahl: If I go to Nashville will I too be imbued magically with Opry - worthy vocal skills? Does everyone you know sound that good? Fabulous

@ TCK: I love my wife, but I wish she could pull off an Emmylou song. You sound great together

@ Eugene: The intro! Never even read that anywhere.Relaxed, cool and musical as usual...great...bla bla bla. You are an inspiration.

@wgy: A Scotsman playing Gospel on a Hawaiian instrument in Finland...Hallelujah! great song, nice rendition, sweet little picking fills.

@sweetdemise: You stepped out where I came in, so welcome back. That seems like a tough song to sing and you sounded great.

@ chrimess: you are the knob kneed rocker, putting that Kelii through hell for us. Thanks for another gem.

@ 29moons: nice art direction, perfect song, and a live audience to boot. Well done

@U-daveey: great song, great version, your a human metronome.

Hopefully not forgetting anyone. Lots of fun going through the songs so far, hoping for more.

Pure joy Rob!!! Fine treatment of a classic song that I'll look forward to singing with you one fine day. :)

The song is usually done with a bounce ala Johnny Cash (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAb44ljG3ck)... but at my age I rarely do bouncey any more.
The slow tempo is more inspired by Kelly Joe Phelps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5O2x0SwxPM) interpretation on slide guitar

Bless you my friend- as you well know, there have been many nights where I saw my devil. I knew recording this that you would dig it, thanks for your kind remarks as always.
Not sure it comes across, but when we sat down to record it, we kind of looked at each other and said "Really? Are we really going to do this one?" It makes us smile, but it is one of those intimidating covers you don't want to touch. We start every practice session with it now ;)

@ TCK: I love my wife, but I wish she could pull off an Emmylou song. You sound great together

Haha- You are too kind. "Pulling this off" has nothing to do with us being any good at playing. It is all about loving the song, connecting to the words...We knew it long before the Ukuleles came out. This was the fourth time we played it, and we never played it right before this take.
Of course, in two years, we have found two songs that click that fast (this being one- Harold and Maude Theme being the other). However, we continue to play every night together for hours...entirely because we want to and like to. It is nice to know that someone else smiled because we did it.
In any event, I only write all that crap because at the end of the day...we are together and always will be. I know we sound like hell most of the time, but we are together, and we have little tiny guitars all over the place that help us do one thing- express that. It is rewarding to know it comes across, and that people remark on it, because really, that is about the most important part of my life (besides my dog- damn I love that dog).
Cheers mate-
Dave

I've been keeping an eye on these, and every week I plan my entry, and then every week grad school punches me in the face. The semester is almost over though, so hopefully I'll be back to occasionally joining in in another week or two! In the meantime, I will satisfy my seasonal uke habit by watching all of your amazing videos during fits of procrastination.

Here's my entry in to the 20th Season of the Ukulele.

As a Deadhead I must say I love "FOTD" and I have a about twenty different versions recorded live. You did it great justice. I enjoyed listening.

Great challenge this week, Ukelites! Great stuff, Seasonistas!

I learned to love this song when I was young, singing it with about a hundred other children at camp...

It's another bonus track. This is an early Genesis song, from 1970. I'd figured half of it out a couple of years ago, but never worked out some of the instrumental sections. This week's theme inspired me to rip the CD track into Audacity, lower it from C to A to match the key I'd been playing it in, and figure out the rest. So thanks, Ukelites, for giving me an excuse to finish learning this song.

Originally, I was going to skip this week. Now I've done heaven, hell, and angels. I half want to do a devil song and complete the quartet. I'll be busy tomorrow, but maybe Sunday...

You win the bonus! This is an unprecedented bonus within a bonus. Angel In Blue by J. Geils Band and then Sweet Chariots. I love this song. It's off the same album as Freeze Frame and Centerfold. Please forgive my flat notes. I am so on key in my head that I can't understand what is wrong when I record it and listen back. Now I know how Idol rejects feel.

Keeping notes as I make it through the playlist...

@tootler - Love the way you sing ballads. Your singing and strumming let the lyrics and the melody tell the tale. Subtle dynamic changes as well. Nice.

@thesillydave - (Cheek to Cheek) You've definitely got the swing for this one. Sounds great. (Hell) This one brought a big smile to my wife's face. You've got that 90s swing, too. Cool. (Pennies from Heaven) That's two votes for heaven from you, Dave. Guess you're an angel rather than a devil. And that's a successful crooning attempt, sir. Nice one.

@uke4ia - (Heaven) Does this song make you think heaven is wonderful or horrible? For me, it's a little of both. Those sad chords sound great on your uke! (Run Like Hell) That's some psychedelic rock uke. Great stuff. (Visions of Angels) Two bonus tracks?! If you keep going, you'll break peewee's record. Nice version---you've got the knack for playing a melody on your uke while you sing. I am jealous of that knack. (Swing Low) Fun! I was humming a fiddle part along with your version.

@ukuleledaddy - I love sad songs that say "Don't you cry." Too late, I'm already crying about my dead honky tonk pals. Nice one, daddy!

@peewee - (Heaven and Hell) Great Fire Dept. of Hell uniform. Great song. Way to let out your inner Arizonan howler, too. :) (Aloha from Hell) Way to work those mellow island chords. Nice rockabilly breakdown too. Hellish lighting. You're a real devil.

@nongdam - Ah, a sweet song sung with feeling. These never go out of style. And was that a little Jackson Five at the end? Sweet.

@myrnaukulele - Great singing here---you really raved it up at the end. Stylish look, too.

@sweetdemise - Welcome back, Seasonista! Lovely picking. Nice, subtle dynamics here in both your playing and your singing. Cool.

@strumsilly - Lovely, almost reggae, version of this classic. You had me harmonizing again. Gracias.

@MattLindahl - If I squint a little, y'all look like three cowpokes on the high plains. If I don't squint, y'all look very cool. Either way, sounds great. Pass it on to the Angel Band.

@TCK - Sweet and sad, just right. Great, gentle playing from both of you. Lovely harmonies. Gracias.

@eugene ukulele - Perfectly placed in the playlist after TCK's tune referenced this one. Love the way you change the rhythm just by emphasizing different beats. Lovely singing. Muchas gracias.

@wee_ginga_yin - (When the Roll is Called) One of my long-term goals as a musician is to be able to play steadily at slower tempos. You're definitely my role model for this goal on the uke. Lovely version of this lovely melody, Rob. Gracias. (Angels in Heaven) Another great one---very groovy backing track. More inspiration for me. Backing track.

@chrimess - That back-up singer gives your angel song a little more of a hellish feeling. Cool.

@29moons - (Snowball) Great snowball suit and set! Sweet, light strumming and singing. Good one! (Angel in Blue) Ah, those crickets are almost in key with you. You're playing at a great tempo here---relaxed and mellow.

@ukuleledaveey - Your steady strumming's getting a more expressive and dynamic every week, Dave. Nice choice here and nice performance!

@UKISOCIETY - Your sweet, sparse version reveals again what great song-writers Sparks are. Great. Gracias.

@ksiegel - Lovely picking here. Nice dynamic range here in you playing. Sweet singing, too, angel.

@Dougf - Love that gentle, Dougf swing. Great lyrics, too. Nice one!

@Barbablanca - Welcome to the Seasons! Great song! Love the way you project your singing. Hope to hear more from you in the coming weeks, Bernie.

@23skidoo - Cool! Sounds like y'all had a ton of fun on this one---thanks for inviting us to the party! Slide whistle solo?! Woohoo!!!

Thank you all for your kind words.

23Skidoo, we have the wall primed with magnetic primer so it holds magnets, too. Homeschool happiness! And a versatile background indeed!

here's The Skidoo Family & Friends Review's take on 'Hell' by the Squirrel Nut Zippers - features my buddies Natch (bass), Zac (fiddle and piano), and Mrs. Skidoo on guitar. My daughter Mia is the lovely angel playing slide whistle and uke. The other uke is fellow SEUker Alan (UU user decaturcomp) and his family, Terri and Matt, on percussion. Not sure if this qualifies as 'uke front and center' but we had a devilishly good time doing it.... enjoy!

Okay...way too much talent in one place...I'm surprised the building didn't explode!

And...there went my fallback song (Country Roads is not working out 'cause allergies are really constraining my vocal range). Great job though! I may still do this unless I can throw something else together quick...but you're a heard act to follow - especially with the wall art. You must be a teacher or something - who else has a chalkboard for a wall?!! :)

Welcome to the Seasons, pootsie! Good performance. Love the way you slide those chords around. That's some friendly delivery of some rough lyrics---a little more of that 'aloha from hell'. Nice.

All right. I did "Heaven", "Run Like Hell", and "Visions of Angels". So here's a devil song to complete the set. This is a Procol Harum song.
