My wife and i are holidaying in Dunedin and IT WAS HER IDEA to visit friend and luthier, Steve Barkman.
So a cuppa and a chat later I've ordered a mahogany tenor with macrocarpa trim and a macaasar(?) fret board.
VERY excited.

Congrats! Look forward to some pics.

Cool. :)

Yay! I like the way she thinks. When will you have your special tenor?

He'll be able to start on it in two months. Funny thing is, I know Steve's guitars well but wasn't sure what he'd think about making a ukulele. But the reason it'll take a couple of months to get started one mine is that he has four tenors on the go already - two of them eight strings.

Congratulations!

For those who, like me, hadn't heard of Steve Barkman, here's a link to his website.

Steve is the nicest bloke. Lives is a little settlement on the penninsula outside Dunedin. Workshop attached to his house. he was happy to dig around in his wood piles and show me all sorts of options, happy to discuss the details of inlay and machine heads etc.. In the end I opted for mahogony and macrocarpa, fairly plain instrumemt and I'd leave the design details to him because I know he'll do it justice. I've seen several of his intruments in the hands of New Zealand musicians including Lorina Harding http://www.myspace.com/lorinahardingldw and Hyram Ballard http://www.thechaps.com/music.html - I respect those two enormously so if Steve is good enough for them....
Two of the ukes he's making are heading for USA and I know his guitars are played all over the world so you might bump into them at some stage.

Cut it out....it's paradise down there....and, yes, there is quite often horizontal drizzle......but that means Steve will stay inside and build my uke!!

Pretty amusing to see a guy from Nelson with the best weather defending the weather in Dunedin <g>. Is Steve the guy who has the shop that's just off the Octogon, or is that another luthier who makes guitars and ukes? And, those old Dunedin weather chestnuts, Don't like the weather, wait an hour and it will be different, or Dunedin has four seasons and they come in one day. When I was there in high summer last year it frequently was warmer in Winter here in Athens GA than in Dunners <g>. Fond memories though. g2

The slogan in Dunedin is "No such thing as bad weather - just inappropriate clothing."
Steve works at twang Town which is owned and operated by Hyram Ballard who is also a fantastic guitarist and in The Chaps
