Sounds like a great interpretation. I find that you just continue to play the song over and over, and it will get better and better. Sounds obvious, I know, but it is the key. Keep working on finding the melody notes so that they pop out more. Neil Diamond songs work well on uke. I recorded Solitary Man this past winter:
