Check out "Pandanus" by Peter Moon. It's one of my favorite "tropical" 'ukulele songs. Other than that you might try looking up Troy Fernandez and his great album "Hawaiian Style 'Ukulele".

Everyone has different preferences....Like if you say what is the best tasting food?? go to You Tube and listen to a few...
What I like may not be what you like... If you say what are some top local or hawaiian songs...that would help...I like the old Kalapana....

Perhaps a more interesting question might be "what chord sequences/combinations sound Hawaiian ?"

Or I could just Google "Hawaiian vamps for Ukulele".

I sort of met Andy Bumatai yesterday. He was MCing a show my band played at and he kept asking me how to say Uncle George Kahumoku's last name. I didn't realize it was him at the time...

There's some good stuff on here! Just about any Hawaiian song sounds good on the 'ukulele regardless of what the original instrumentation was.

Another few:

Kawika by the Sunday Manoa (more Peter Moon!)
E Wai'anae by the Pandanus Club
Ipo Lei Momi by Keali'i Reichel features a young Jake

That's a good place to start. It's mostly hapa-haole stuff (my favorite genre) but at least you're wanting to play something close to Hawaiian music on the ukulele! Good for you Mac!

Yes, that's a comprehensive book. But since most of the titles are in Hawaiian, unless you know the songs to begin with you're going be pretty lost.

Most are available on YouTube. That should allow you to become familiar with the notes and tempo.

Thanks Chuck for mentioning that- I never knew what the Hawaiian music that i listened to most was called. hapa-haole!

Awesome! Haha, I forgot Ledward was in the video! :)

I remember a few years back when I took a day tour to Big Island, the little tour bus that drove us around played Hawaiian mele all day. I love the stuff but in the afternoon, some of the other folks on the tour were going stir crazy from it and asked the driver to change the music. Guess it's not for everyone, eh?

Hmmm. I saw a version of this concert when these guys were touring in the Bay Area in spring 2011. I don't think they had the hula dancer with them. I would have remembered that.

Yup, love that song too. I think that's more Hawaiian Reggae than mele, right?

Add Justin Young to that list:

Just wondering why no one mentioned the presence of Dennis Kamakahi, songwriter of MANY hits, as well as Nathan Aweau on his Conklin 7-string, songwriter in his own right.

Oh, I forgot, the dancer.
