Mark your calendar for October 13, 2012 for the Blackwater Ukulele Festival. festival.charlestonhotshots.com

This is the third festival co-hosted with Cypress Gardens, the V-Tones and The Charleston Hot Shots. Each festival gets bigger and better. It is the only festival of its kind on the south east coast and gives people the opportunity to take workshops, meet other ukulele players and touch, play and purchase ukuleles that locally are only available online. Mims Ukuleles will be at the festival. If you see something online you are interested in, call Mim and she will bring it to the festival for you to see.

The festival is put on by local ukulele enthusiasts, and this year proceeds go to help with a new habitat for the alligator display at the Gardens. The Friends of Cypress Gardens, an all Volunteer Group, is providing staffing for the festival.

We kick the festival off with a set of workshops appropriate for the beginner through intermediate players. They are taught by local ukulele legend Donald "Noodle McDoodle" Whitley, one of the best ukulele players on the east coast.

The free concert will be put on by our band the Charleston Hot Shots, a "Skiffle" band and The V-Tones, a unique ukulele swing band.

Our Hula workshop culminates with the attendees kicking off Ukulele Open Mic by dancing the Hula. All workshops are $10 each, you get a free raffle ticket if you attend a workshop, and if you attend two workshops you get three raffle tickets.

Another unique feature is the Boat Jams, where ukulele players man the Bateau boats, 10-12 to a boat, and are rowed around the swamp singing and jamming together. Even the non-ukulele playing visitors to the park get a real kick out of it.

There is open mic where the local ukulele crowd gets to perform, some for the first time. We have had folks from 8 to 80 get up and play. Check out the video's and pics of the past festivals on our web site. This is extremely popular.

Lastly we will have a raffle. Individual raffle tickets are $5 each.

For the non-uke playing members of your family there are the regular park attractions, a gift store, island vendors, craft vendors and food vendors.
