keep in mind, that the mahogany, mango, and the koa ones are not solid top construction. but the tops do add something to the overall tone of the uke. personally i would go with either the mango or the spruce. i just love how the mango looks. but i would expect the truest sound to come from the solid sprucetop.

Hi,

Check out the PONO PTO. It cost 400$ but it's really amazing for the price.
If you look for a solid mahogany ukulele that will last for years, thats the one.
I have a PONO and a KALA, bought are good but the PONO is simply perfect.

what do you mean by not solid top construction? what is that?

The retail price on their site is 400$.
I had mine for 300$ ... guess you had a nice price !!!
Lucky you.

Solid mean real pieces of wood and not laminated wood (sheets of wood glued together). A solid construction sounds way better, more natural sound.... And the ukulele will last longer.

just a thought but maybe that is why it was 100 dollars. because it was messed up. i just baught a lanikai concert and it was almost 200. everything on it is beautiful no blemishes anywhere. did you try to take it back???

yeah at first i wanted to exchange it for a new one. but then they ran out. so i told the guy at the guitar store what was up and he said he would fix it for me. well when i left the nut was connected but when i tuned it it messed up again. the thing is it was a brand new lanikai tenor. it was still in the packaging so i dont think the would have know it was messed up. i still have store credit, but they dont have anything new in. i dont know if its because of the nut but the strings sometimes buzzs when i hold a chord down.
weird huh

im gonna try a tenor kala now, hopefully i have a better experience. BTW so does the spruce top sound better than a mango? because im between those tow right now.

"better" is subjective. see if you can find a spruce top uke at a local shop and compare it to any other uke that is not of solid top construction.

i used the word "true" instead of better, because you are actually hearing what spruce sounds like on the uke, as compared to the mango, which is just a laminate over who-knows-what kind of wood. i believe the laminate does have an effect on the overall tone, but it is not going to actually be the sound expected by a solid top.

whether you will prefer this sound or not, is up to you. there are times that i prefer the brighter sound of my solid spruce top. and there are times that i prefer the sound of my laminated koa.

I have a Kala KTEC that I got from musicguymic on ebay. Mine cost 295 with free shipping and came with a free case, dvd, and pitchpipe. Its the koa one but i found out it isn't solid construction. I'm very pleased with it though. Its nice lookin, plays well and has a nice bright sound that projects decently.

I would probably buy that mango one that nuke linked to. I love the way mango looks and i've only heard good things about it.
